I've successfully changed my username, so I know it can be done. My first username was my first initial & my middle initial & my last name, so much for confidentiality!
As for aliases, that is a different subject entirely. TER VIP's are allowed to create and post board messages under an alias. These are frequently used to used to set the tone for the message (perfect example, when an advice message, I usually use my UncleJazz persona, but I always end the post with true name jazz32. Many guys follow this procedure.
Aliases are are also frequently used to post controversial posts on the boards, which the public doesn't exactly who it is coming from. Trust me the board's moderator, and the powers that be at TER, (these are 2 entirely separate entities), will know who you are.

As Jazz said on how to do it-- I did it when I realized the first user name was too recognizable by my wife if she ever caught on to TER, I sent the request and was very pleasantly suprised that the staff at TER not only changed my user name almost immediately, but it changed my prior name to new name on all past reviews I had done and all past discussion board posts. I was impressed and pleasantly surprised.
