Politics and Religion

I've been listening to the coverage all morning, and it sounds real.

After I got past the point that I thought the whole tragedy was factual for change and not another made up story for political gain or a mock event staged for that benefit, I was captivated by the tone of the Police Chief and the Mayor in the press conference, and of the witnesses that NPR interviewed. It was not as I've come to imagine how most Texans usually talk.

If you remember Ted Cruz when he campaigned you heard how almost everything he said was vehenently angry and so super-tough the way he'd sneer and threaten everybody except when he was trying to defend himself, then he'd have that "Jesus made me do it" indignation. You've probably heard Rick Perry drawl on in a similar way. So, naturally, I've come to assume that that's how most Texans talk most of the time.

But this morning, none of the voices on the radio sounded like that. Everyone sounded empathetic and not at all threatening or viscious. So I think there might have been some good coming out of this. Now the police know how people feel when someone close to them is killed. Maybe now they'll think twice before decided to go out like a gunslinger in the movies and kill somebody.

So I guess it's not a hoax,

This time in Minnesota recorded & shown on face-book a 33 yo. black man who was by all accounts a model citizen   needlessly shot to death during a traffic stop. This kind of action by the police officers that we trust to keep us safe must stop, the officer told the man to show his drivers licence & when the man reached into his back pocket to get his wallet the officer shot him four times. I'm not sure this post belongs on the politics board but this seems like the best place to discuss abuse by a policeman & the misuse of a firearm, it makes it plane why people of color fear the police.

From all accounts he had a conceal and carry permit and a firearm on him. I have read that he told the officer he had the gun and was reaching for his wallet after being told to show his ID. Entirely the fault of a jumpy officer.
I will say this, officers are told and trained to use deadly force if they feel threatened or in danger and do it in milliseconds. If I am carrying a concealed weapon and a police officer has a firearm pointed at me my hands would never leave the top of my head or dash of the car. Cuff me, tape up my hands, do what ever he needs to do to feel safe but the very last thing I will do is move my hand anywhere near my gun. Anyone who carries a concealed weapon has some risk of something like this happening, regardless of them following the letter of the law or not it is a risk to carry a firearm. It could be a store owner who sees the holster, another customer, undercover cop. The list of things that could go wrong is a mile long so unless I really have a need to carry I probably won't.
When life and death hangs in the officers perception of a tenth of a second any risk is too large in my opinion. I don't know if it was racially driven, I would hope and pray it wasn't. Either way the cop most likely made a huge mistake and a man died. There is a very small chance the man was reaching for his gun with intent but I am 99.999% sure that's not the case. They are trained to kill first if they feel a threat and it really is coming to light now. Training has changed, video cameras are everywhere and now these cases are being made public nationally so I can't honestly say if it's worse now than 10-20 or 30 yrs ago or if it's just a lot more publicized.

My heart breaks for the two victims of the police shootings un Louisiana and Minnesota. Right now at this moment, my thoughts are with the families of four slain police officers in Dallas and with the families of the injured police officers as the madness in Dallas unfolds.

This songs still reigns true today as much as it did in the early 70s when it was released.

Sadly,

Steph

Also I agree some people do fear the cops, but most don't respect them.
It makes the cops job harder and creates more problems with the mistrust of the police.
The videos shows why it's a lack of trust too.

So, what Texas wants us to believe, is that people are killing policemen. Not that the police are killing people.

And now in Texas, this is supposed to give police license to kill even MORE people!

What a fucked up system. And they are treating us like fools because we can't do anything about it!

......if we find out that the shooting in Dallas is an ISIS inspired terrorist attack. It's a sad day for all these victims of gun violence in La, MN and Tx.

the one murderer they cornered and blew up with a bomb said

"he was upset about: police shootings, Black Lives Matter and white people"

he said that he "wants to kill white people, especially officers"

as I have often said, violence is a common tool for the left

we ALL knew this was coming

BFRG is happy today

If ignorance were a commodity Americans would be the richest  per-capita  on Earth.

The Dallas massacre is NOT  going to help slow down police shootings of suspected criminals, no matter their race.

Incredible he has sunk this low. Just another cop hater like Laffy or BP.

You are just despicable.

Yep that'll teach the cops! A little of their own medicine right WB?

How is Rev Wright, btw?

The sad fact is there are lots of violent people in this country who have nothing to do with ISIS.  Who needs them when we've got plenty of home-grown nuts of our own?
Also, comparing the killings in LA and MN to Dallas is bogus.  The former were horrible and inexcusable but not pre-planned.  We don't know all the facts yet but both seem to be instances where cops over-reacted.  The Dallas killings, however, seem to have been carefully planned, using overlapping fields of fire.  Mass murder, plain and simple.

Out of all the libs on the board, just two of you have disavowed the killings and the killer as cold blooded murder.

I guess kudos should be in order for you and SaltyBalls for looking at the murdered cops for what they were, innocent victims of a deranged and heartless murderer.

It's really a sad state of affairs when kudos seem to be deserved for simply acting human. Just how low are we going to set the bar here going forward?

So there were not "overlapping fields of fire."  That came from the Dallas PD but they've now withdrawn it.

It's part of the White Elitism that has existed since the conquistadors, even before Cortez and Columbus and Manifest Destiny probably. But yeah, Trump fits the mold and is devoted to that kind of hatred.

was the trigger puller a "white elitist" in a BLM thug murderer disguise?

you fucking crack me up!  ;)

you libs are so very silly

when I may have thought that police shootings of black men was because black men created the situations that caused the police to shoot them. NO MORE after watching the videos of police brutally shooting a fleeing unarmed traffic stop suspect in the back 5 times, and the Chicago policeman shooting a suspect 6 times that was casually walking across the street & many more seemingly senseless police shootings I have changed my view of what some white cops are doing & the clearest answer is prejudice against people of color. I support the work of our police officers and I understand that every day they face potential danger, but that is not a reason to kill even suspected criminals just because of the color of their skin.
