Yep...once a year. Not sure how or when I established this personal tradition. This year it was Offley. Not an expert on Port , but it was really rather good.
not because i know it, i don't. i've heard good things about it though.
demand for port is declining and small producers are getting squeezed out i find some of the smaller producers and some of the shippers interesting: Quinta de Ventozolo, Pocas and Souza have been memorable.
about 20 years ago when I stumbled upon a small winery & tasting room in St. Helena in the Napa valley where the proprietor, Jim Prager, made port following the Portuguese wine laws. It was exquisite port and when he offered to sell me a case of his latest vintage (after explaining that because of the stringent requirements of the Portuguese laws he didn't declare a vintage every year) I was very tempted. But the port was $ 36/bottle (in about 1985 dollars) and I was married with 3 young kids at the time and I didn't think I could well explain to my wife the wisdom of spending $ 400 or so on a case of vintage port from California, so I passed. I'm glad to report the Prager winerey is still in operation (http://www.pragerport.com/) though their top ports now sell for $ 70/bottle. I tried to develop a family tradition of drinking vintage port & sherry prior to big holiday dinner with extended family but the family eventually got too scattered to continue. I do appreciate you guys sharing; maybe I'll get back into drinking good quality port.
