although I've seen some spray-on's that look terrible.  As for stockings white, black, red what ever the color they work for me, especially with the seam line up the back.

Actually in both cases I do like both.  It's not so much the individual color or shade.  Rather it's how each contributes to the total visual effect.  Food is a fair analogy.  You have the view or Presentation,  then you have the Contrast in color, shape, and form individually and against the plating used.  Then you have the contrast in texture and flavor both in the presentation and in the consumption of the food.

That said I do lean slightly towards the white skin.  (Purity perhaps) In the stockings, since they cover a lot of are I seek a bold use of color either with the stocking themselves or with other accessories.

Don't be afraid to try stuff and watch what happens as you do.
