Stephanie,

One it is nice to see someone your age care! The problem with DC public schools isn't money but the mayor, the school board, the unions and the parents! It has been this way for 30 years or longer. Everyone is blaming each other and pointing fingers! However, it is the kids who suffer!. The primary cocnern of the adults in DC and Congress regarding the DC Public Schools should be the kids. Nothing else matters. Forget your egos!

Good Morning all,

Hi. I got home yesterday and read each and every response to my post yesterday.  I sat at my desk for about and hour and thinking about the issue.  I realize that the relationship between Bush’s space proposal and the state of DC public schools has nothing to do with money (DC gets A LOT of federal funding and I overlooked that).  When I was watching the news yesterday morning and saw Bush discuss the plan, I became angry.  I thought about the child I met  a year earlier who could not read and I thought to myself…”What is wrong with this picture?”  It was not necessarily the money that Bush wanted to spend (even though the US is so in debt it is a shame) but it was the proposed effort that Bush was going to put in to this project…that was what annoyed me.  That effort could be focused and trying to revamp the declining state of such public school system as Washington DC.

But to be quite honest…the PARENTS and their  PARENTS are to blame for so of this!!  I empathized with the child I met a year ago.  Everything that is indicative a child of color growing up in the US public housing system I experienced.  But what helped me evolve into the women I am today (minus the chosen profession) is my thirst and hunger for education and knowledge which was developed by my father.  He used to “Joe Jackson” my behind if a got an answer wrong or used incorrect English.  But that is another post and I am not saying that it is okay to teach a child in that manner but it was how I was taught and it worked.  Academically, I have always excelled without a problem and could read BEFORE I went to school.  But the PARENTS are the people who are responsible for laying the foundation for academic and educational hunger in their child not the school system.  The school system is there to further enhance upon that foundation so that the educational house a child finds him/herself in later on in life is strong enough that will hopefully shelter them for joblessness and poverty (that is the ideal situation but we all know it does not workout that way!!)

And that is all I am trying to say…I let my emotion get the best of me and I should have thought about the context in which I want to convey my message of disappointment pertaining to Bush and his plan…thank you.  Good day
