Hmm I don't agree with some stuff in this study

1. "Many johns view their payment as giving them unfettered permission to degrade and assault women. “You get to treat a ho like a ho,” one john said. “You can find a ho for any type of need—slapping, choking, aggressive sex beyond what your girlfriend will do.”

Disagree: I treat my provider-ladies just the same as I treat my own girl... not "treat a ho like a ho". Lots of BS in this study. Maybe it focused on the lower-end of the scale or something?


2. “You can see that life circumstances have kind of forced her into that,” said one nonbuyer in the study. “It’s like someone jumping from a burning building—you could say they made their choice to jump, but you could also say they had no choice.”

Mixed feelings: Some were forced and had no choice, but many girls simply just love the luxurious lifestyle, making several times more money than most doctors/lawyers, meeting exciting new people, and addicted to the high life.


There are more I don't agree with but too drunk to continue typing sensibly. I'm sure others will contribute.

Conjecture or Science? Is there a causal relationship?

I don't have time to read the whole article but from what I read, it does not seem to support a correlation between prostitution and violent behavior.

Farley's conclusion that pornography and prostitution is "inherently harmful and should be eradicated," looks to be her preference not supported by the results of her interviews.

"In their interviews, the sex buyers often voiced aggression toward women, and were nearly eight times as likely as non-buyers to say they would rape a woman if they could get away with it."

and

"Farley’s findings suggest that the use of prostitution and pornography may cause men to become more aggressive."

I don't see a causal relationship here and I don't even see a correlation between pornography or prostitution, and violence. I interpret it as saying that prostitution and pornography is correlated with the *fantasy* of aggression, and do not necessarily incite violent behavior. It is possible that prostitution and pornography prevent the acting out of such fantasy.

According to an article in the August 2011 issue (yes, it is already out) of Scientific American Mind, "The Sunny Side of Smut", "for most people, pornography use has no negative effects -- and it may even deter sexual violence." There are a couple of references included in the article. It talks about pornography, not prostitution, but since the Newsweek article lumps prostitution with pornography, I'm offering it as another side of the debate.

A quote from the Scientific American Mind article under the section "Self-Medicating with Fantasy",

"Perhaps the most serious accusation against pornography is that it incites sexual aggression. But not only do rape statistics suggest otherwise, some experts believe the consumption of pornography may actually reduce the desire to rape by offering a safe, private outlet for deviant sexual behavior."
