So it looks like the Government shutdown will go through.. Anyone have any suggestions for fun things to do in DC that aren't government funded?

There are other attractions. Museums that aren't Government run, Spy Museum for example will be open. Also the weather should be nice so enjoy a walk on the Mall and the Monuments. Take photos. Enjoy the day.

If you are into art, the Phillips Collection just off of DuPont Circle is a very nice museum.  Also, the National Geographic center, or the Newseum are good bets as well.

To do something outdoors. The weather is supposed to be nice this week so I would suggest that you actually check out the Billy Goat Trail that runs along the Potomac River. Another suggestion would be to visit some of the private museums in the city

The Museum of Crime and Punishment (Gallery Place area)

The Hillwood Estate Museum (Closest Metro station is Van Ness)

Seconded.  I think this is the best museum in DC.  But plan a long day....there is just so much to see and go through.

of the Smithsonian but it is not.
While I do endorse the Spy Museum, Newseum, Phillips Collection, and Hillwood Estates as worthwhile places to visit, be advised that they all charge admissions, unlike the Smithsonian's or the National Gallery of Art which, being largely publicly funded, are all free (but thus also get caught up in the mindless foibles of government).  The Spy, Newseum & Crime & Punishment (which I do not recommend, was given a free pass to that about a year ago and left after about 20 minutes as I was totally underwhelmed) are all in the $ 20 admission range, Phillips is more like $ 10 and Hillwood is $ 15,; Hillwood is tough to get to, you have to either have a car or take a taxi from the nearest Metro stop which is Van Ness/UDC.  And I am told that Arlington Cemetery is still open so you can go there and watch the changing of the guard (every hour on the hour) and it has it's own Metro stop on the Blue line.
Hope you enjoy your stay in spite of the idiot politicians!

The City Paper, for all its irreverence, has a great section about what's going on in DC.  You can often find out some obscure things such as a traveling art exhibit in somebody's embassy.  It's a freebie that comes out every Tuesday.

There are also the Capitol Hill "power lunch" places.  Just hang out and you never know whom you will bump into.
