My argument is "why put a spotlight on yourself?" considering the way LE is conducting business.

Just like if you use Tor while you browse the net NSA puts a spotlight on that person( US citizens included) and monitors because it looks guilty.  With laws changing as it relates to phone data...why be an easy target and subject to extra monitoring by having your named attached to the one you make hobby calls with? people ain't using their real name as a handle on this board...no need for the phone as well.

Hobby phone seems future proof IMO as a layer of protection since the name with the girl or agency would not match the name on the hobby phone account. Fool proof? No!...but it looks like circumstantial evidence from phones are being collected for future reference.

Or maybe I should ask why....

But, There has always been a contingent of folks on this site that says its a waste unless you are married. However, if you make the wrong call the man is looking for the name attached and will probably monitor for a period of time.  As based on reports from a recent Anne Arundel sting.

Hell, they are looking up info of dudes that only called the sting number. And it's not hard to monitor an escort number and get the names of who is calling if they get approval to go that route...and consequently see Joe 6pack calls Ivanna Fucalot every two weeks and tracks location. Calls made/received and location of ya phone is becoming public info for LE...probable cause is simply calling a number that advertises escort services etc.

Also I feel it's best to do hobby related Internet business on the burner as well cause IP addresses can be linked. Just don't login into your real life accounts or transmit identifying info and you should be anonymous minus location. pop the battery out when not in use.

I think a burner is mportant given that day-by-day more info is collected about people for ads and because of modern terrorist activity. Hell, having poor credit people on ya Facebook is bad as well, lol

A Burner seems like a requirement IMO...more now than ever with analytics and patterns being drawn from phone data with ease now in days.

Calling a potential escort's phone number is probable cause for what

Calling a potential escort's phone number is probable cause for what?

"Police charged the men after they responded to the internet advertisements.

Detectives they are currently reviewing the phone numbers in an attempt to identify the subscribers.

An investigation into this case is ongoing. "

Can't link due to rules...but it is from WBAL.

Are you saying probable cause is being used to look into who the owner of the phone number is?

They're probably Googleing the phone numbers, nothing illegal about that.

or were you saying calling an escort's phone was enough probable cause, to open an solicitation of prostitution investigation on the phone number owner?

Not to take away from the importance of safety. I think their "attempt" is a scare tactic

Anyone can accidentally dial a number, but notes can be made and patterns can be spotted. " oh such and such called both our stings which may not be an accident and could get authorization to snoop further. Hell, Intelius can give you a listed name on the account from personal experiments years ago...I'm sure LE uses it since a phone company wants a warrant to give out names etc.

Feds jumped into the Denver situation with local LE and had fake P411 accounts. And for anyone that thinks Feds cant obtain records from the NSA even for something minor as prostiution would be niave.

I brought up fake p411 accounts months before Denver situation on the newbie board a couple of times and maybe on this one and I was accused of over thinking and told it was too much effort...ha.

I was curious of what there would be "probable cause" for/of ?

...and the legalities of that "probable cause"

Not sure if this is what you're asking and maybe you already know this, but:  Basically probable cause is the legal trigger to get a search warrant or to make an arrest.  It's the beginning of the end.

So is the point that:

- If LE presents a pattern of calling escort numbers from your phone number they can obtain an arrest and or search warrant on you and then do what?  Say they do connect the dots via your computer and or phone, once they obtain it, that you contacted known prostitutes.  They can ultimately charge and convict you for solicitation?  Is there presedence for this?

I agree with what other posters are suggesting here - the act of calling a phone number that appears to belong to an escort - in and of itself - shouldn't be probable cause for anything (either a search or an arrest).

The article seems to be suggesting that some "suspects" may have called the number AND asked questions that could suggest they were soliciting. So maybe they are trying to prosecute people for soliciting solely over the phone (without actually showing up at a hotel)? If that is the case, that seems pretty drastic.

And you will realize tat some people are watching for patterns

I just use a Google Voice number...

So long as I don't commit a felony, no one is going to track back through that to find me.  And it's not registered to my name, and I only use it for this, so even if they publish it, who cares...
