seems like outcalls are safer with respect to LE stings.Unless,I guess, they are tailing the provider around town and hacking both you/provider email accounts.
In another discussion board, someone noted that there was currently a crackdown in MD and posted a link to an article noting a bust in Anne Arundel County. Should Newbies (or everyone) stay out of Maryland for the time being?

Google got me two articles. One article says Anne Arundel County Police arrested a woman in one bust in early July, and the other article says they arrested four men in another buts at the end of June:
Arundel cops bust suspected prostitute at BWI area hotel
The hotels and motels around BWI Marshall Airport are frequently used by prostitutes, as anyone monitoring police reports out of Anne Arundel County can attest. Here are some details on the latest arrest:
"On July 7, 2011, at approximately 10:30 p.m., members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Vice Unit executed a search and seizure warrant on a hotel room located in the motel/hotel district in Linthicum, Maryland. The execution of the search warrant was the result of numerous complaints of prostitution taken place at the hotel.
"During surveillance conducted on the hotel, detectives were able to stop a client as he left the hotel and conduct an interview. The subject indicated that he responded to an ad located on Baltimore backpage.com. The male client revealed that he paid money for an appointment with a female in exchange for sexual favors. During the execution of the search and seizure warrant, several condoms were located in the room along with four cell phones, prepaid credit card receipts, prepaid credit cards along with U.S. currency. The female subject located in the hotel room was charged with Prostitution by Any Means and Assignation by Any Means."

State and County police are watching hotels in multiple counties in Maryland. I know a provider who was busted and was questioned by the FBI. They took her phone and gave it back to her. Make sure you have your answers ready if LE questions you and stfu. One county in Maryland they are posting mug shots of providers who have been busted. Last year a county in southern Maryland posted mug shots of 12 guys on the internet !!! The guys were busted in a internet sting.
In one article, the paper said that there were numerous complaints about the hotel, they nabbed the John, he rolled on the providers, and the police took her downtown. She may have been well reviewed, but perhaps she was bad at screening for hobbyists who are discrete?
Any advice for newbies on avoiding or recognizing these situations?
Vice is being very sneaky in Maryland. They have done a lot of underhanded possibly illegal stuff and have got their face slapped by some judges.
Never ever talk the LE without a lawyer present. If they take you in during a bust. Continue to ask for lawyer lawyer. You will be able to get out because they need a confession, especially if it is a well reviewed provider that has been flipped.
To summarize rules, most which you can glean from previous posts, that willl minimize your risk:
1) Stick with providers who are well-reviewed on TER.
2) Use independents and avoid agencies.
3) Use a verification service like P411 instead of giving out all your info.
4) Avoid appointments in hotels, expecially in known hot spots like BWI and Tysons.
5) Stick with providers you've seen and like.
6) Be descrete and observe your surroundings.
7) If it looks TGTBT, it probably is.
8) If you run into LE, STFU.
Sounds like a lot of rules, but it's really just common sense. Have fun and be safe.

How might that be done without excluding 90% of market ?
I know.it's not really practical but if I call a provider and have her come to my "upscale" (god I hate that word) hotel the chances of an LE sting are greatly diminished.
It is a good idea to follow the pieces of advice listed in this thread but, realistically, some of them are difficult to follow, such as not using agencies at all or not going to hotels. We just need to weigh our needs against the risks.
Another thing to note is that not having been questioned by LE does not mean that you've been doing everything right, just as having been question does not mean that you've been doing everything wrong. In other words, getting busted is a low occurrence, high variance event; luck plays a big part in it. So follow the best pieces of advice and hope for the best,
