From the website:

December 17th is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This event was created to call attention to hate crimes committed against sex workers all over the globe. Originally thought of by Dr. Annie Sprinkle and started by the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle Washington. International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers has empowered workers from over cities around the world to come together and organize against discrimination and remember victims of violence. During the week of December 17th, sex worker rights organizations will be staging actions and vigils to raise awareness about violence that is commonly committed against sex workers. The assault, battery, rape and murder of sex workers must end. Existing laws prevent sex workers from reporting violence. The stigma and discrimination that is perpetuated by the prohibitionist laws has made violence against us acceptable. Please join with sex workers around the world and stand against criminalization and violence committed against prostitutes.

this initiative is deserving of support. My sense is that there are a number of monsters in our midst who consider sex workers to be bereft of human dignity, unfortunately.  Articles 3 and 7 of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights will hopefully one day become the guide for the way all people, regardless of their lifestyle and work, will be treated: (3) "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person." (7) Article 7. "All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination."

I know a lady who worked for a once popular agency in our area who was assaulted during an appointment-- few weeks before Christmas--resulting in her inability to work for several months. Because she was a sex worker and fearful her means of supporting herself would come to light, she did not report the assault.  She got large hospital bills and several months off work without any sickness or accident benefits to support her and her son during her convalescence. The creep who did got banned, of course, but that is hardly justice, in light of the harm--physical, financial, emotional--she suffered.
