What I don't understand or appreciate, is when someone uses them to post something cowardly or spineless in an effort to stir a pot, be catty or be outright deceptive. These posts are easy to spot, and TER certainly cannot police them. We are all adults afterall. IMO, f you have enough gumption to post it, have the balls to sign it or stay out of the thread or discussion. Am I the only one who has this pet peeve?
I never use them. Even If I had something to say that wasn't all that positive Im still won't use an alias. I thought maybe I was alone in thinking of it as being cowardly.

Aliases are abused far more than they are utilized for legitimate reasons. In the end, the folks that run this place don't give a shit, and there will never be "justice" for the idiots who abuse the system.
I had my own little period of ranting about them a few years ago - ended up getting banned. The lesson - this board is set up in a way that will always let the spineless bastards/bitches do what they want. Accept it and move on - or don't.
it's fairly immaterial to me whether it's from an alias or not. As most of us, I have seen the full gamut of self-centered narcissism & ego-inflating rhetoric, mostly mindless and usually obvious to all. I guess if you're going to have a forum and open it up to nearly anyone with the price of admission then you must expect that, since a certain percentage of humans will always be self-centered a-holes, there will aways be some of those posts. I thnk the mods do a reasonable job of banning the most offensive. I used to occasionally give a barbed response, but since that inevitably led to more mindless rants from one of these egomaniacs (who are never wrong, in poor taste or out of line), I've learned to just shrug and move on, comfortable that most thinking readers will see clearly just what a jerk the poster is and give the appropriate weight to the comments. Life's too short to let these idiots mess with you.
For the my first 3 years on TER, I had not once used an alias. Then something happened and I had a need for more anonymity so I posted with aliases until I started to lapse. Then something else happened. Now I post only with aliases. For some members here they know who I am.
Either you agree with someone's post or you don't. It does not matter who he is. In my experience, posting with the real handle rather an an alias might not draw out a honest response. Several times in the past, I posted with aliases to register disagreements; they went ballistic. I don't think they would react that way if they knew I was a regular member of the board.
in a way if you are responding to something that requires an opinion ....I might see your point. But some people (men and ladies alike) like to use this to be catty or a total moron, and they would never dream of standing up, mask off, and saying the same thing. Just as some of us would never dream of saying the things we type anonymously on forums like this. I mean like an old wise member of my family once said: "dont let your mouth write check that your ass cant cash" And the funny part is many times you can tell who it is anyway. LOL....same style of writing or mistakes in punctuation give them away. TER isnt to blame for this...how much can they police before it gets stupid? You cant stop people from being asshats if asshats are what they are. You can only temper it. If you cant get away from them at the office dont look to remove them from TER LOL...you're shoveling shit against the tide. If you are posting under an alias all the time and its the same alias I guess that might be different....I have a client who does that but he told me who he was when he started talking to me. When I book someone for example, I like to see their online personna. Thats why I prefer TER members for clients. You in some cases can get to know them by their posts. I had someone book with me in NYC recently and he hid his screenname for fear he would be judged harshly....little did he know he would have had an incredible session had he just been honest at the start. Now when he returned the sparks were flying!
I have seen hobbyists get outed on blacklists over threads. What you may see as cowardly or spineless another may see as self preservation and others may disagree with your perception all together.
To give you an example, if I say a provider is flabby or her kitty was not fresh on a thread, I can count on not seeing any of her "friends" That's not something I would not post on a public board with my real fake name. If I want to call someone out for saying something really stupid, does it matter so much if it is an alias? Too many people focus on the messenger, and not the message.
I will agree with you that some of us do push the limits on alias posts. I am one of them. Again though, your perception may be entirely different then mine. What I may deem as funny, you may not.
You are better off not waging a war against aliases because it is one you will never win.
I say all of this to you as a friend, although I still prefer to use one of my many fake names
well, I guess I enjoy the person who posts their opinions without a mask. I feel some odd respect for someone ...even if I disagree with them and what they are trying to say. Thats why the politics board can be entertaining...

Nice post. What really perplexes me is when individuals post rather harmless comments or quetions under an alias. I basically do not hide behind alias's and have little regard for those who do.
I never used an alias when I was using my old handle. But after several instances, I can understand why someone would use an alias (I'm not saying I agree with it). First, I posted about some over-worked girl in an agency and got banned from that agency. Then, I posted in the reviewers only board about a provider who's pics were so outdated that they were no longer a fair representation of her. Her WK leaked my post to her and I got harassed mercilessly. The thread became a train wreck; admin had to flip the WK's alias and then kicked him off the board. Finally, I received an e-mail threatening to 'expose' me if I didn't leave TER. This happened last year there was a panic in the DC area. I was fairly certain it was from someone I pissed off on the board, but I didn't want to take a chance so I changed my handle.
I still will not use an alias if I decide to point out something negative about a person or an agency. It sounds naive but I want them to know who their accuser is. Some will even say I'm a fool.

another great reason to use an alias. As I mentioned in the OP, there are reasons to use an alia and I dont think TER is wrong in the way they give members freedom to do so. I DO think however, that certain members need to grow up. EX I posted about a party on the new york board and some jealous pinhead decided to post under an alias to point out the "rules" because I mentioned I was bringing a guest (guests are allowed, but they need to be screened, which this person was going to be) they then contacted the guy who was throwing the party. It was like being in kindergarten....and i know who it was too and why they did it. Lets just say I have a long memory with things like that. Another example is when someone posted something under my picture, it was an ad...something complementary, and someone else came in and passive aggressively bashed the guy who wrote it (under an alias of course)...then proceeded to send antisemitic email to him. Total spineless crap. How old are we here?
I agree 100% with your point. I personally never respond to a thread posted by an alias nor do I answer a pm by someone without numerous reviews. Other than that, over the years I've learned to live with ter as it is. What would you do without it?
I do believe the posting by aliases recently might be getting out of control. I believe our mod is on top of it and I appreciate that.
