that if a professional lady has facebook "friends" who are clients. in DC it might not be unusual for various clients to have interests that are in conflict. to highlight the HUGE difference between facebook and email would you want to out yourself to a business competitor or someone who may be hostile to your interests?
that is why i think facebook is vastly inferior from a security POV to email. it is EXTREMELY indiscreet.
i know some thoughtless ladies will talk about clients to other clients, that is troublesome enough. but to advertise your patronage to the world on facebook? YMMV but i think it's clueless.
I found this story at Wired about the changing face of the hobby, and it was very interesting. I think it's pretty New York-centric, as are many things at tech-related sites, but it brought up some questions for me.
It mentions Facebook as a prominent way to have clients contacting escorts. Now, maybe I just fail at Facebook, but I have no idea how I'd use it to make contacts like that. I've browsed around various escort blogs, and a variety of review boards, but nothing about social media like Facebook ever suggested itself to me as a useful hobby tool. I could maybe see it as useful in a good-sized community, but it looks like it would have a lot of potential to blow up, and for too many spammers to jump in -- searching for "dc escorts" gives one hit, which goes to AFF through a link anonymizer.
Anyone care to school me on how Facebook can be used in the hobby, or is this just a New York thing?
They post a lot of new pics on their page. Most of the pics are taken when they travel so they're not very explicit, but it's still fun to see them. Quite of a few of their friends are also escorts. If you're interested in seeing one of them, it's much easier to contact her since you are a friend of her friend. Sometimes, they would send me a private message letting me know they're in town and asking me if I want to play. It can be useful for contact between clients and escorts. However, I would not use it to contact someone I've never seen before.
It is riddled with errors. Clearly written by an individual who has no idea what he is reporting upon. For starters, why would anyone advertise as an escort on Facebook? You are outing yourself to everyone you know for all time. And why would clients, who go to the trouble of creating hobby email accounts, communicate with an escort using their real life Facebook account?
My favorite misnomer in the article: an escort having a Blackberry is a sign that she is likely disease free ....
The author IS a sociology professor, and that's not the best-regarded academic discipline, to be sure.
That said... it's certainly possible to have multiple FB accounts, maybe for "Real Name" and "Hobby Name" -- you just have to be sure to log out before doing anything that might belong to the other account. Might be easiest to have one account for your laptop, and one for your desktop, maybe. They'd have to use different email addresses, but THAT isn't a problem.
I got the impression from the article that the escorts he interviewed saw the BlackBerry as a status item. I know that I view a lady with latest-generation tech as more likely to command better fees, and ladies with crappy old phones as more "low-rent" providers.
I just don't understand WHY anyone would use Facebook for escort advertising, or even how. Maybe it's a New York thing -- there's certainly plenty of other stuff in the article that wouldn't fly outside NYC. (I'm most familiar with Baltimore/DC and Dallas -- those markets have some radical differences, too.) I guess I could see it as a way to keep up with ladies you intended to see on a regular basis -- it's an easy way to stay in touch, and can be easily accessed from many mobile devices. I just don't get how it's all that different from email.
