And Vidalia, around the corner east on M, is also very good. Zagat's once said that what Vidalia does with onions and the check will both bring tears to your eyes. Less expensive ethnic places that are very good are Heritage India, Busara (thai), and Rocklands (barbeque), all on Wisconsin above Georgetown. The French Bistro on M in Georgetown isn't bad and is open very late. Downtown (near MCI center) Bobby Van's has great steak. Gerard's Place is probably the best French food in DC.
That is also one of my favorite places to dine in down town. I also like to head to the Hotel Washington balcony for cocktails; the view over the White House into Arlington at sunset is "memorable."
So many great places depending on where you are and what you're in the mood for...I recommend two sites to explore.
1) Washingtonian is the standby in this city for restaurant dining www.washingtonian.com/dining/default.asp
2) I also like washingtonian.opentable.com/start.aspx?m=9&n=35 because they put together several reviews from Gayot and other sites which you can link to for free (usually Gayot requires a subscription).
These are well-known places. No secret gems in the lot, but you probably won't go wrong.

Felix - Cuisine is Thai, Italian, Filipino and continental and most ingrediants used are organi. 2406 18th St NW - It is a restaurant during the evening and a bar/club at night on the weekends.
