So I have a question. I'm heading to LA for a few days in Jan., and scoping out the boards and reviews there (maybe it's just me) but it seems like things are a lot more expensive out there ($$$$ and $$$$$) with reviews in the 7's and 8's. Is that just the glamor of LA? Maybe we have it really good here.

Yup, we have it really good here.  I've been to LA a bunch and prices have jumped there in the last year or two.  Spend your hobby money here - it will go a lot farther.

I think your observations are generally correct...so are Oldmember's comments. However, LA does have some "star" quality, as you would expect from the adult film industry.
