DC - depressing?

and I was attacked by a bunch of hermits who must live off prozak, Marlboro lights and jack daniels. This city is an absolute ZERO when it comes to traffic, entertainment, geographic beauty, crime and cost of living. Jeez, even the strip clubs leave so much to be desired. You are overcharged and taxed for everything, yet DC, VA and MD are always in the red. For those of you who are from out of town, don't get the wrong impression. It still sucks here in July although a free concert on the National Mall or a new exhibit at the Smithsonian may passify you. The crime rates spike, traffic remains awful, it gets even more expensive and the beaches are still cold but on a positive note the water does become a lighter shade of grayish-brown.

Thank GOD that the girls from out of town have started to return to DC after the stinkbomb that somebody (who will remain nameless) let off.

Unfortunately, I have to stay for reasons beyond my controll. I do my fair share of traveling though. NY is always fun with world class entertainment, the best restaurants possibly in the world, incredible providers. Yes, it is an expensive city to live and play in but well worth the price. Have not been to Lancaster PA.

I was not born here but came here from the 808 (Hawaii) as a toddler. I will say this to you Nubian, that there is an old expression about the grass is always greener on the other side. Well, comparing the DC area to just about any other major city like NY, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Denver, New Orleans, Seattle Portland, Montreal, Vancouver, Dallas, Toronto, Albuquerque, Nashville and I wont even mention cities in California or Hawaii. Well, I honestly think that the grass and just about eveerything else actually is greener.

Notice I left out Philly, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore and Detroit. Well, those cities make me realize that DC is not that bad afterall.

Being a weinie when it comes to DC traffice and snow storms I found myself canceling on a lady touring here that I have been wanting to see for like forever. I appreciated her understanding and great attitude.   And when we finally DO meet I will definitely make it up to her.  Most of us always warn ladies about scheduling tours to DC during Jan-Feb.  This is why. I'm pretty sure tomorrow will be a wash as well.  A tour [ especially from the west coast] is a big investment.  Has to suck when circumstances beyond our control cuts into the biz.

Was lucky to get in before all the weather hit.  Roads weren't bad at all for me this morning.

Sitting here stuck in traffic downtown I'm thinking that it might be nice to just find a lace to park and walk meet someone staying downtown.

I'm sure there is a lot of truth to your post but I seem to have a blast here.  I was not born here, not from here, but I've stayed because there are tons of things I do like.  I will admit if I felt the way you do about this area I'd leave pronto. I won't bash you because I tend to avoid being petty. I also don't smoke, take prozac, and don't drink alone.

Here's a tip, NYC is only train ride away or you could head up to Lancaster where the outlet malls are to get a new purse.

Just having fun with you cause all this snow has put me in an even better mood than normal. I don't know what I enjoy more.  Reading the "I hate... posts" or the rebuttal threads from those offended.

Please cry away.

of expected weather-related cancellations to book last minute with a traveling lady. She said nothing available; methinks she don't know DC weather.

Have to ask how much time youve spent in New Orleans 808..
Its a fun place to visit for a few days if you know where to go, but living there is a completely different situation entirely.
Crime, corrupt politicians, ignorance, a perminent subclass(we are talking generations here) racism beyond description (very interactive by the way). I do miss New Orleans once in a while its true, but then I recall the  4 inch long cockroach I saw one morning looking up at me on my bathroom floor. My friends theorized he simply swam up the sewer into the toilet and my house.
Now, about DC, yeah it sucks in my view also. All the aforementioned items on the thread are true although you must admit the restaurants are good. Note, please remember to bring all your money.
People are often just plain rude. Girls from other cities (i.e. touring girls) tell me some of the guys here are so nice. I think its because of the local civies we have to choose form. A more Type A dominated me me me group Ive never encountered anywhere.
This means for a wonderful marketing climate for the objects of our interest and so viola, here they are lol..!
Now I guess there is least one redeming feature to the place. Still cant wait to leave however..
Hope everyone digs out and stays safe.

Actually LA is not called a sportsman's paradise for nothing. The Gulf has some exellent fishing that leaves the Chessapeake Bak way behind. Although I am not a hunter but would love to give Alligator hunting a try. There are celebrations planned throughout the year that make me want to head there like Bastille day, Jazz Fest and Mardigras. Not just that about every night there is partying going on all night.

Yes, the state is very corrupt especially the police dept. That is a problem that just about every major city in the US has. Look no further than Prince George's county that borders DC. The county Exec is out on Bail and the police Dept (see article below) does not have protect and serve reputation either.

I found the Big Easy as a pleasant/fun city both before and after Katrina. Lots of sweet southern belles from Alabama, Missisippi and Northern Florida. The people seemed very hospitable and it was not a city that you needed a Black American Express to enjoy a decent dinner. It is not paradise and there is lots of class discrimination but that is no different than any other big city. I will be back and looking forward to it.

I'm not going to say DC is great or bad because it runs the gamut between the two.  Are there better places to spend one's life overall?  Of course, if one is flush with cash or a job that pays well and can be done anywhere.  DC is a city with large suburbs that have a lot of people that actually earn a decent living.  Hence DC has a nice selection of playmates, both local and visiting.  Check other boards and I think you'll see DC has one of the more active and intelligent boards.  As far as other activities, there really is a good selection for almost any activity one would like-boating (to include sailing) - hiking (with local and foothills nearby) - biking, both surfaced and trails - cultural venues - live music venues (some are actually in the upper echelon of the country) - skiing (though not the highest caliber) - artisans - photographic opportunities galore and more. Hard to find one city that can offer all that DC has to offer.  Of course there are many negatives too, but depressing?  I just don't see depressing if one really sits back and looks at the overall picture.  I guess it really boils down to perspective.  I like it here overall, would I move if I won the lottery?  Yes, but knowing that if I do lose my job, I have a better opportunity to earn a decent living here helps me, a single guy with no one else to support my butt.

Sorry to get off task but I just re-read your last post about how depressing DC is and I must have missed something because I didn't see any evidence of anyone who "attacked" you.

A few people (myself included) shared the view that the DC area "...is what you make of it". A different view then your own for sure but IMHO one that's more positive and less opinionated which I can't see as a bad thing.

Please understand my intent is not to bash or to be petty but I'm curious what was posted previously to cause you to judge others, whom you've never actually met, by calling them "a bunch of hermits, who must live off prozac, Marlboro lights and Jack Daniels" (none of which are applicable in my case, btw)?
