I've long thought that the street system in DC - with the various NW, SW, NE and NW options, plus the circles and the state streets were one big test to see just how badly you actually wanted to go wherever it is you want to go.
And maybe thin the out-of-town herd a bit. It SURE could be easier and more intuitive.
I will be in DC tomorrow around 16th street. I figured I would ask some of my "friends" if there is anyplace at all I can park. I wont be able to get there early enough to catch a train and so unfortunately I will have to drive. Do any of the hotels allow parking for a price or are there any places I can park and just pay a fee. PM me with details if anyone can help?
If I am forced to take the train and I am coming from the Baltimore area any suggestions on what route to take/ I would reall prefer not to do this.
from Lafayette Square into Maryland & there is also a 16th St. in NE & SE DC. So unless you can tell us which 16th St. you're going to & about where (K St., Military Rd., Walter Reed etc.) no one can help you. And when you ask about a train do you mean the Metro or AMTRAK/MARC commuter trains? Hard to offer you advice without more info. But, most hotels may offer parking early in the day if you're going to be out by say 5:00 PM or so, but their parking is first & foremost for their guests. With more info some folks may give you some advice but we can't based on what you've told us.

You are actually dead on with your thinking of the layout of DC - it was most certainly intentional in it's design by L'Enfant to be confusing to people visiting to humble them a bit.

I have good luck there daytime. Do bring coins for the meter, I don't remember if they've already converted to those ticket machines which take credit cards.
