"Understanding is a three-edged sword. Your side, their side, and the truth."
- Vorlon Proverb -
Here's a few considerations which may or may not apply to this specific instance but, should be added to the mix. Keep in mind, I deal with hospitality businesses almost daily so the trends we see are different than most. However, to anyone who books rooms on almost a daily basis, what I'm about to point out will not come as a surprise.
1) Time of the day determines which facility gets used. Try getting a room before noon in many places. You SOMETIMES can, but most of us do not run a business on "sometimes". In such cases, you go with whoever has the highest reliability. By the way, front desk people are notorious for telling you that you can get a room but, when you get there and there are serious delays.
2) One hour clients don't expect the Ritz. Get real. This is a business. In some areas, hotels after taxes are $120, if you're lucky. In many cases, that's 45% of the total fee before the rocket has left the pad.
There is this perception that Agencies are rolling in it which, is so far from the truth. Like any other business, we have fixed and variable costs and this industry is down just like everyone else. A smart Agency owner knows what they are and uses the appropriate hotel for the fee level of the call. If not, then frankly, you will go out of business sooner or later.
3) Online venues such as Priceline or hotwire are crap shoots unless you know how to manipulate their system. In such cases, both parties have to deal with the results.
4) Events, bookings, time of the year and acts of God all play a part in trying to get a hotel. Sometimes, booking a room on a given date and time in a particular area is a bitch. Why? Who the heck knows; it just is. I stopped trying to understand it years ago. It happens and as a business owner, I have to just flex with it and do the best I can. However, there have been many times it's bitten me and other Agencies on the ass.
As for hotels with outside entrances, there are pro and cons for us and for the client. The basis for those considerations are completely different (that's a rant for another time). However, there are SPECIFIC cases where, from our side of the line, they are preferable depending upon geographical area.
