are all in Dupont Circle. However, for my money, you can't go wrong with Charlie Palmers on Capitol Hill -- the best steakhouse in DC. BLT downtown is also pretty good.
In DC there is a shortage of privately owned steakhouses. The rent is way too high and the overhead kills the bottom line for a steakhouse that does not have corporate backing.
My favorite steakhouse in the DC area is a 30 minute drive from downtown DC in Annapolis. It is called Lewnes Steakhouse in Eastport.
Well, as far as downtown DC is concerned. There are a number of corporate steakhouses that pretty much all are bunched together when quality and price is concerned.
Here are my picks and my $0.02
Ruths Chris SH in Dupont Circle- The steaks are not grilled but made in a weird electric toaster and then saturated in butter. YUCK. The wine list is moderately priced compared to rival steakhouses.
Mortons SH in Georgetown- Same concept as Ruths Chris. Only without the gross burned butter on the steak.
Capital Grill- Market Square area of Pennsylvania Ave. Similar to RCSH and Mortons. Only better quality meat and grossly overpriced wine list.
The PAlM SH in Dupont Circle- Well, this is one of the DC area's best places to be seen. A true power broker's hangout. The food is superb quality and the "Grafitti" makes for a good laugh.
My favorite SH in DC is Charlie Palmer's SH on Capitol Hill. The quality, service, attention to detail and wine selection is possibly the best in DC. It aint cheap but I am sure you would not expect it to be.
I always get Bone in Ribeye (medium well because of the marbling. Marbling is strips of fat that enhance the flavor. Unfortunately, fat is nasty to eat rare and difficult to cut when not fully cooked). A side of Brocoli rabe and the Polenta makes for a better alternative to the usual Baked Potato and Asparagus. Unfortunately, the wine list is priced way out of my budget. Otherwise no hobbying for me so you are on your own there. Oh one last thing. Try a side of chimichurri for the steak. I tried it once and am hooked on it now.
Ray's Hell Burgers, down Wilson at Ray's the Steaks' old location. For $10 or less you can get a burger with fixings that is better than most steaks I've had in my life.
If you are looking for a proper steak there are really only two places to go in DC, one of which was previously named and that is Charlie Palmer. The other is BLT on I and it's 100% fantastic. The apple popovers alone are worth the experience. Both would be short cab rides for you, my personal preference leans toward BLT but have never walked away less then 100% fat and happy from either place.
The Palms, Morton's, Ruth Chris and Bourbon Steak are all over priced for a less than fantastic cut of cow but of the 4 Bourbon Steak stands out. Besides if you are going to travel, why dine at a place that you can go to in any major city?
Both are near Dupont Circle & in the same league as Ruth's Chris, Morton's et al. What you really should do is take a minute to look at Washingtonian Magazines's very detailed breakdown on DC Steakhouses--link provided.
I know you will enjoy your stay. But gotta tell you , this ain't Chicago. Seems like you can get a good steak every other block in your city. For DC, I'd suggest sampling the many eclectic restaurants near Cialis...opps , I mean Dupont Circle. Many great ethnic offerings can be found...plus DC enjoys quite a few great places for seafood. Have fun.
both great places. The Prime Rib is a bit more stuffy, but the food was better. I had a prime rib steak which is a slab of prime rib, grilled.
My wife had the prime rib and we ate the leftovers for 2 more meals. Seriously generous portions.
The Palm was top notch, but was not as memorable. The dessert portions are ridiculous. It could have been split between 4 people.
I would give a thumbs down to Ruth's Chris. I've had better steaks at Outback and the ala carte thing pisses me off. The steak is expensive enough, don't charge me $5 for a potato and $7 for asparagus.
Now Ruth's Chris I think is way better than Outback. Ordering a steak at Outback is like going to Taco Bell and saying you got a topnotch Mexican meal. Just my .02
universal standards. Morton's started this years ago in their original Chicago place & they all do it. So your choices are don't go (i. e. Outback etc.), go & pass on the sides, or recognize the true cost of dinner at these places includes the $ 6-9 sides. It's a standard business practice for these guys so griping about it is pointless. No offense, just pointing out the reality.
