In the event someone untoward (like LE) happens to gain entrance to a room or stops someone in a hallway, what more loudly screams " HEY, I'M DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL" than a plain white envelope with a few hundred $ in it? Does anyone really believe than the ol' "white envelope on a desk" custom would ever exonerate anyone from being considered to
be "exchanging money for services?"

No, probably not, but they might try that story for want of anything else.  That was probably the origin of the custom, but I think is continues because she can check it when and if she wants, and it is a more "tasteful" way to pay the fee than just dumping a pile of money on the table.

I had one gentleman friend whom wrote "Happy Birthday" on the white envelope. I thought that was very clever. -eom

Gotta love them.;-) I actually like when I am given a card and an envelope to go with the card. It is also a nice touch. Some ladies like actual cash to be laid onto a table so that they can see they have actually been paid. I have heard countless horror stories of the gentlemen placing an envelope on the table and when the provider checks the contents, after the client has left mind you, she comes to find the envelope has been shorted or there is nothing at all inside! Now you would say if the provider is seeing a man with references this wouldn't happen, but it does.  

  I prefer the gentleman pays me how he is comfortable with..as long as it is real money and what I asked for... I will not complain.

Provider friend once told me that a client ran out after the session as she was getting him water.  She found that the envelope he left contained an expired betting slip and $1.  This was in Vegas.  Now she checks the donation before anything starts.  I also hear clients trying to pass counterfeit money is on the rise.  Few bad apple are making things more difficult for every one.

Some times I just use the bank envelope I made withdrawl with. Would that be considered rude or bad etiquette?

They are meant for cash thus a better cover.

I got a big box of white cash envelopes mainly for casino trips and also for hobbying, but bank envelopes with bank logs are better.
