It does sound like two women were trying to run with the money. One of them did get hurt (I hope not intentionally).
One had a legal escorting license for the state.
Too me it sounds like he didnt do any research, they tried to cash and dash, the argument spilled into the hallway, cops were called because all this is going down, and he admitted he was up to something.
All wrong, if they take your money and run, it sucks, but just say ,"ladies you have a good night", had he done that he'd be good right now.

If I were him the second it got loud/drawing attention, I would have said byebye. If there's no LE in the first place, there's no LE to explain anything to.
What you describe BTW is considered impeding an investigation which can get you in ALOT of trouble.
