the fact that the consensus of folks who feel the data speaks to global warming laugh among themselves about those who criticize them is just an ad hominem. it isn't a technical argument.
the critics of global warming don't offer anything technical that upsets the physics of the fact: increased CO2 atmospheric concentrations (correlated neatly with increases fossil fuel use) cause the atmosphere to trap more heat. escaping that calculable conclusion is a tough job that the critics have failed to accomplish. the most the critics have accomplished is that the pro global warming argument gets better and better but the policy debate gets delayed.
i am sympathetic to the pro global warming scientists need to "blow of steam" about their opponents. many of those opponents have political or economic interests that make acknowledging the data highly inconvenient. that's my little ad hominem.
if you analyze the geopolitical consequences avoiding making policy decisions in a timely way about global warming the potential downside is much more serious than the "war on terror" but less serious than the consequences of a "small nuclear war".

When I was watching "An Inconvienent Truth" and the former VP was lecturing about how the inroduction of fresh water ice melt (sea ice has salt and wouldn't decreas the current salinity of the oceans) would cut off the Gulfstream, I thought that this sounded like the operation of a heat exchange system. As heat increases it triggers inflows of coolant (antifreeze, water) to reestablish thermal equlibrium. In the Earth's case this cooling cycle would allow sea ice and glaciers to return. There's no telling how long this would take or how gradual or volitile this process would be. While some of the evidence Al Gore presented appeared compelling, in the Earth's history it has taken meteor strikes and major volcanism to shift the climate. This is planet is a dynamic system that is capable of absobing and adjusting to human activity.

the main issue geopolitically is that global warming will cause increased competition and global stresses on the way to an ice age. BTW do you really want the mass die off that waiting for an ice age would bring?

if one imagines the risks to include war, possibly the use of nukes on a large scale, that would cause a net global cooling because of the dust in the atmosphere.

My idea[l]s are, in general, an open forum to discuss the providers freely and not be attacked for having a contrary opinion and, specifically, that providers/agencies do not misrepresent the provider through stats or pictures.
