You can use the metro or try driving during the day when there is less traffic.

Is it easy to get from northern Virginia into the city and vice versa for people? Or is it a big headache to get near the Convention Center if you are staying in northern Virginia?

We see that there are trains and can use a ride share, but want to know if it is realistic.

Thanks for the help.

The Silver Line will take you from Tyson's into downtown DC. If you avoid the rush hour commute, it's not a bad trip. There's a trip planner on the website that will help you figure out travel times. Driving and parking in DC can be a headache, just like most cities. Also, check the metro rail map for the most convenient stops. Some hotels may have a shuttle or be within walking distance.

It's realistic.  As many have stated, the DMV is notorious for its traffic depending upon the day and time.  During the weekday, D.C. is a nightmare for traffic and parking - weekend is better.  IMHO, Tyson's is a better option for driving and parking.
As you noted, the METRO is available and in D.C., very convenient.  At Tysons, depending upon the hotel, you will need to use the hotel shuttle or Uber/Lyft/cab.
Good luck!

some people take the metro, others drive.
I drive back and forth almost every day; no issues. Just try to be off the road on peak times lol

I'm so used to drive in DC, MD and VA that a 45 min drive is awesome ! LOL
