Virginia has an E-W span of about 470 miles stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, and about a 200 mile N-S span stretching from northern MD to NC.  Quite a variation in temps and precipitation throughout the commonwealth

Wherever you end up in Va I bet the winters are a million times milder than what Massachusetts has experienced the past few years.

In the popular Northern Virginia region (DC suburbs), we usually get one or two large snow storms each winter, and several storms with low to modest accumulation. This area is somewhat protected by mountain ranges to our west. So many times we fare much better than western VA and northern MD. We certainly do not see anywhere near what lands on top of PA, NY and New England.

The region surrounding Virginia Beach has a completely different weather pattern because of its proximity to the Atlantic. During my days in that region, I never saw more than an inch or two of accumulation. However, this area is more susceptible to Hurricane weather during the summer, which really is not a factor for most of Northern Virginia.
