Take highway 1 south to Miami's southernmost subburb, Florida City.  When you see the Wal Mart on your left, start looking for West Palm Drive, or Highway 9336, which will take you to Everglades National Park.  Your first stop once inside the park should be Royal Palm, where you will not only see a ton of alligators, but get close enough to touch one (don't actually touch it, of course).  Then get back on the highway and continue south to the village of Flamingo, where you will be able to see crocodiles.  It's the only place in the U.S. where you can see the American Crocodile, and the only place on the entire planet where alligators and crocodiles share the same space.  Oh, and don't forget to hang out on South Beach while you're in Miami.

I have taken a number of cruises. A few things that I do include...

SAFETY
- If you do not need it with you that moment or that day, keep it locked in your room. (Passport and valuables in the safe)
- Know your surroundings. On the ship things are relatively safe, however when you leave the ship... be careful.
- It may cost a little more, but take ship-sponsored/arranged tours so that you do not get lost, or delayed in returning.

KNOW YOUR SHIP WELL
- How many restaurants available, what are the additional charges for them
- Does is have an adult pool?
- what activities, and so forth are available on board?

RESEARCH YOUR DESTINATION/PORTS
- Know the schedule and routes
- Bring a small notepad with you as you travel about
- Bring your passport and ship card with you so 1) you can get back on the ship, and 2) you can get back home if (God forbid) you miss your ship at one of the ports.
- What is available to see that you can get to from the ship in walking distance (not above I reference taking ship sponsored or arrnagex tours, but this does not mean you can't so something on your own, just be close to the ship)
- Online search out what cultural things are available, what is the food like, etc.

Having a good cruise experience is mostly about enjoying yourself without being taken advantage of. Be aware of your surroundings. And the research may help you to determine what to bring with you. I'm sure after I post this, others may agree with some points, or disagree on the finer details, or have more to add from their perspective. Nevertheless I stand by my initial statement that the best advice is research.

Hope you have a great cruise. (Wish I was joining you!
