Hey Nikki, I used to live near ALB many years ago. Avoid downtown area especially near Central Ave. NE ALB used to be the best area to stay. Hope you enjoy the green chilies while you're out that way.

The airport is in SE ALB, which is not the best part of town (at least when I lived there). The hotels, especially the high-end hotels like the Sheraton or Marriott, are most likely safe places to stay.
I would recommend the Old Town area. Hotels like the Best Western Rio Grande Inn and Hotel Albuquerque may be good choices. All these hotels are within walking distance of Old Town, with lots of really good restaurants.
The Uptown area, which is north of I-40 along Louisiana Blvd, is also a good area. Many hotels in this area. In the shopping areas, many good restaurants, and Coronado Mall and Uptown Mall are within walking distance.
Lastly is the area near the junction of I-25 and I-40, near the intersections of University Blvd. and Menaul Blvd. La Quinta, MCM Elegante and ClubHouse Inn are in the area. No shopping, but easy access to both interstates, and to anywhere in the city.
