Best way to get around town?

Hey all! I'll be in DC for a few days next month and I need some advice.  What's the best way to travel in and around the DC area?  Last time I was there, I relied solely on Uber, but ended up spending a fortune since we'd get stuck in awful traffic just about every time I left my hotel.  I've heard good things about their public transportation system, but I'm worried that I'll spend half my day just trying to figure out how to get where I need to go.

So what's your favorite way to get around?  Are there any apps you can recommend for navigating the metro?  Should I just invest in a good pair of flats and hoof it everywhere?  Thanks in advance for any help :)

Then you can peddle your ass all over town.

Seriously however, I knew some gals who did that around Boston at one time.  It's cheap and great exercise, and you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic

Which is really easy to use.  Also, it is less crowded now as school has started and there are a less number of tourists visiting the city. The best time to visit IMO is between now and the end of October.  The suburbs and surrounding areas like Arlington where I stay is easily accessible by either the metro or bus.  It's also a great walking city if you like to get out and see the sights. Hope this helps.

Split (split.us) operates in Northwest DC and is definitely more economical than Uber. One of the perks is being able to see how much the fare will be on the front end. Though, it's more similar to Pool than UberX, and you'd need to be down with sharing rides with strangers who are being picked up and dropped off along a similar route to you.
