It really depends on what you want to experience and see. I am an exploitative traveler so when I go to NYC I ditch the car and ride the train. I take Uber if I am meeting someone somewhere to get there faster because I don't know all of the train routes. If you use Google on your phone it will help you out a lot.
HOTELS: I have only stayed at two hotels in NYC. The Baccarat hotel on W 53rd St close to Time Warner center and Central Park. It is a high end hotel, average $500+ a night for a small room or $1,500+ a night for a suite. Their bar is fabulous and I love their concierge. They also give you personal shopping assistants and a couple of spa and shopping vouchers for select guests. I also stayed at the NYMA, The New York Manhattan Hotel on West 32nd St. It is a cute little boutique hotel in Korea Town. Average $200+ a night. I wanted to be close enough to walk down to the ball drop in December and it was perfect. They have a cute cozy little rooftop bar and you can see the Empire State Building across from it. MALLS: Time Warner Center. Otherwise go to Herald Square, or 5th Avenue and the entire place is a huge outdoor shopping spree. THINGS TO DO: Definitely go to Central Park. It should be perfect this time of year. If you go to NYC later on, go during Spring so that you could see the Macy's Flower Show. Otherwise explore Chelsea, ride the Staten Island Faerie, and walk around Manhattan. Check the local events on google to see whats going on so that you could find more things to do.
I've been around the world, lived in the Middle East for 3 years, went to Georgia during the Russian invasion, have had cinnimon wine whilst gazing at the Syrian boarder from a rooftop in Turkey... but I've never been to New York. And, embarrassingly, I'm kind of scared.
I'm thinking of doing a mini tour to NY, maybe a 3 day dip my toe in the water kind of trip. But NY is so...big. Where on earth would I stay? In MN, you're either in the cities proper (remember, they're "twin" cities) or the burbs.
Any advice in terms of areas to gravitate towards/avoid? Feel free to be as specific as possible - a hotel name and location would be especially appreciated as I know that *not* knowing the area, I'll fuck something up and choose the one hotel with cameras outside every door.
