Posts and threads are numbered in a way with a date and time stamp. Still I have found the best way to pull up specific old threads is to use the search feature - key words and/or usernames being the most helpful. Don't forget to open up the date range beyond the default 30 days too.
I doubt if TER will change the forums the way you suggested but you never know. They may be seeking to expand the discussion boards soon so maybe we'll see some other changes too. There's always hope but my guess is that TER has kept the boards chronological for simplicity's sake.
