given the violent nature in which this was undertaken I'd be for the death penalty...

but that's just me!

My hat is off to the the LAPD who, imo handled this case with class and compassion, never losing sight of catching this scum and showing Paulina, her family and the Community respect from day one!

When this happened, LAPD held a press conference with rep's from the Transgender Community where they spoke about Paulina as a she and not a "he", which was a welcome change from previous crimes against Transgendered individuals.

They also did not let this case sink to the bottom of the stack, but kept at it. I hope this helps her family and friends begin some closure and that Paulina can finally Rest In Peace.

May the trial be swift and the punishment painful. The brutality of his actions warrants an eye for an eye in my opinion.

That's good news.

I hope he spends a long, long time behind bars.

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles police say they have arrested a 24-year-old man in the stabbing death of a transgender woman.
Lt. Wesley Buhrmester said at a news conference Friday that Jesus Catalan was arrested on suspicion of killing 27-year-old Paulina Ibarra on Aug. 28, 2009.

Buhrmester says Catalan went to members of the Hollywood transgender community after the stabbing, claimed he had been attacked and robbed, and got them to help him clean up.

Buhrmester says those who had helped Catalan went to police after learning of the stabbing and gave them a bag of bloody clothes.

After a DNA match, a warrant was issued for Catalan's arrest in November.

He was arrested Saturday in Tijuana, Mexico, deported and taken into Los Angeles police custody.

Well, I'm glad he finally got nabbed.  The dealth penalty is too easy.  They need to let him spend the rest of his life in prison.  Now I forgot what state but someone recently was put to death by a firing squad. That to me is the way he needs to go if sentenced to death.  She was young and trying to make it.  I remember watching the Americas Most Wanted epside and her sister crying saying that she was there with her friends where she felt comfortable. So true and so sad.

The firing squad execution was in Utah. It was his decision. Apparently the firing squad is the fastest and least painful way to be executed. Injection and the chair take a bit longer. Do any states still do the electric chair? Hanging could also be rather uncomfortable I would think.
Call me brutal, but in situations like this, I think it would be allright for the person to feel the same amount of pain that was brought upon the victim. Maybe we could swap him for the woman in Iran that they are talking about stoning.

Good point, I guess the most painful is the electric chair.  I found this site and it looks like there are a few states that have more than one option when the electric chair is an option.  California, how sad....Lethal Injection or Gas.....Where is the pain and suffering.  Again, I hope he goes to prison and gets murdered himself behind bars.

......for a variety of reasons.  But, this seems most fitting:

1.  Rotting in prison
2.  Watching all the years of his life seep out through the concrete cracks
3.  Knowing that everybody else is free and having a life and a family
4.  Knowing that he rusted away his youth and vigor in a prison courtyard
5.  Living in daily fear of the rape gangs
6.  Always wearing the same clothes
7.  Eating only when they say he can

Going to prison for murder is a horrendous thing, but despite the terrible conditions, I still hope that he will come to terms with what he did, apologize, and choose to change his life.

There's always the chance that a person can change and become truly penitent.  But, the death penalty takes away any chance of that happening.

I am for the death penalty. I hope they juice the scum bag up. He had no right to play god and if he does get the death penalty. The scum will get a a last meal and will get to say goodbye to his family. He did not give her a chance to say goodbye. Let him him rot in hell
