I heard the same thing, but was told that this was all a terrible terrible misunderstanding.

The various woman that have been discussed, including the one who he left a message for, were professionals, trainers in fact. Apparently Tiger was simply following his doctors orders in order to keep his calories in check, reduce his  stress level and get more sleep.

The statement today was Tiger throwing in the towel as this whole story got so messed up his people figured nobody would believe the truth so it was easier to go with it.
