Below please find a link to an article on a sexual health issue that is underreported and not understood and a health issue that all on this board should learn about.
As discussed in the article, the rate of anal cancer is increasing among both men and women and people who engage in receptive anal sex are at increased risk. Researchers are finding that the types of HPV that case cervical dysplasia (irregular cell formation at the cervix)and cervical cancer, can also cause anal dysplasia (irregular cell formation in the anal canal) and anal cancer.
An anal pap smear, which is similar to a cervical pap smear, is the method used to diagnose anal dysplasia and anal cancer but there is not yet a consensus on who should have an anal pap smear done. However, the experts quoted in the article seem clear that at a minimum, those who have ever had genital warts should be tested.
I am no doctor and I am certainly not in a position to recommend any medical treatment, but I think that testing guidelines should be broadened to include annual anal pap smears for those who engage in receptive anal sex and perhaps to those who have had multiple sex partners.
