From my experience, its the same as a strip club except for girls not committed to dancing or working all night tend to be available for fun if they are local to the area.  

My experience is a bit dated and not for NYC but I think it might still be consistent with the scene there......If the bar opens up at 5PM, definitely do not show up then....most clubs/bars peak closer to 11PM or midnight.  Go inside, order a drink and relax and see what happens.
