So i mentioned to the Alt SB site that over the past 2.5 months that i've been actively using both them and SA (as a Premium member) to find SBs that i've closed 8 finds (meaning real SBs i've had BCD with) on SA vs. 0 on SB. (I took one SB find to a M&G but she was a clueless civvie who didn't know what the site was about.)
Next thing i see in my hobbying email a transaction receipt returning the $330 in fees I paid to Alt SB. That's almost 4 months of SA fees...yes!
1. Was your communication to the alt site (assume you mean Secret Benefits?) in the form of a compliant or cancellation request? If it was, I can see how that might prompt them to issue a refund, even if you didn't specifically ask for it.
2. Did you ask them to close your account? Or did they close it anyway when they issued the refund?
All web sites (and all businesses) that accept card payments (credit/debit/gift/etc.) must have a card processor service to actually authenticate the cards and move the money - all for a fee to the business, of course. These processors must follow strict rules set by the card associations (Visa, MC, Amex, etc.). Those rules include following strict protocols for preventing fraud and customer disputes. If a business is receiving too many disputes (usually more than 1% of total transactions), they may be shut down by the processors for being too risky.
So many "high-risk" businesses - like a web-based dating site - will do anything to avoid a formal customer dispute. If your complaint was seen as a prelude to a dispute, the site may have decided to pre-empt that dispute by issuing a full refund.
You’re probably right in your reasoning about seeing me as a possible dispute. I probably came off that way with my “hard data” in my email to customer service.
I have zero regrets as the SA hookups continue to roll in. This was the best outcome possible!
Had a similar experience with SB a couple of years ago. A refund AND new complimentary credits. Still got bupkis, but was amazed at that response. Have since deleted the profile, never to return.
