The TEA app was in the news in the middle of last year.
The app was created to allow women who had bad experiences meeting bad, or potentially REALLY bad men on apps like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, etc. It wasn't aimed at sugar dating, but obviously there were women who used it for that. Initially it was a "local" tool for use in (I believe) the NY Metro area. But as it gained popularity it gained users across the US.
The problems:
1. Users must be women, men were not allowed. To ensure this, they required an ID pic and selfie, promising to destroy the images after verification.
2. There was NO requirement to prove the user had gone on a date, let alone even met, the man she was reporting. There was no effort to require the user to validate the alleged bad actions. It was all based on the "honor" system. That meant that any woman could say anything about any man at any time. No proof, no defense from the guy. So ex GF's could trash ex BF's, a woman with a grudge for any reason could red flag any guy, etc. I mean what could go wrong? Women never lie about men, right?
3. There was no method or ability to attempt to fix any incorrect or just fictional posts.
The results:
1. Remember those ID and selfie pics that would be destroyed? Well, they were not destroyed. The app made the news when they had a data breach and ID, user, and report data (names, ages, addresses, emails, etc.) was taken.
2. Along the same time, men started to become aware of the app and started multiple lawsuits for defamation, liable, etc. alleging reputation damage and serious safety issues (men could foreseeably be set up for assault/ revenge, etc.)
Of course, guys want to access the app to see if they are on it. I suppose if a guy can't join the app, he could send a demand to them asking if any of their data is on the app, but that's problematic. "If he's worried he's on the app, he must be a predator!"...
Last I heard they were facing multiple lawsuits for the breach and unethical/unfair/dangerous business practices. But that was maybe 6+ months ago. Until I saw this post I thought they had shut down.
Troubling that they are still around.
