How do I go about finding a good counselor?  I am sure you have covered this in some previous thread, so just point me to it or explain the discipline to me.  I am a mid 50's y/o professional going through a midlife crisis for the last 5 years.  I am trying to deal with the same issues you have heard over and over again among men on this board:  stressful job, sexless and unsatisfying marriage, too young to quit, afraid to start over.  I need professional help.

I don't have friends, family, or a family physician who I have confidence in seeking a referral.  I am also a little wary of calling a hot line and getting referred to the latest foreign graduate from East Africa.  I am in Los Angeles, so I should be able to find someone good.  I am aware of a variety of disciplines that do counseling; MD Psychiatrists, PhD Psychologists, DCSW Social Work counselors, MFT Marriage and Family Therapists, Life Coaches, and several other disciplines.  Honestly, some sound kinda flakey to me.  Are all of the these people likely to be competent and able to help me?   Do I need a specialist?  I don't think I need a psychiatrist, or a sexologist, but I probably need more than a barber and a bartender.  What the hell is a life coach?  What are the differences in all these disciplines and what should I look for?  Is there a TER Board for Counselors?  Do I have to see one provider after another until I find an ATF, or is there some way to screen them for training, experience, unbiased attitudes, and professionalism?  Is gender important?  How much should it cost?   Thanks.
