It works really well. You book the time block, usually 5 hours or so. Price is set in place. The desk staff already has your reservation.
I use it all the time on my daytime dates with my main in San Diego. Sometimes even on evenings because it's sometimes cheaper.
As far as picking the hotel, a lot of these are on the nicer end. So, I would make sure she doesn't dress like an obvious hooker. If she's in casual clothes, or if you were out together and then go to the hotel, you're just a couple. If she strolls in the lobby in a really short skirt she may get booted.
I was going to suggest booking an Airbnb. A quick search in a few cities showed that most Airbnb's have similar checkin times to hotels; 3pm or later.
What sites have you looked at for day use hotels?
Some hotels offer early check ins (sometimes for a fee) which might help you. But most cancellations require at least 24-48 hours notice which means you’re screwed.. if your date falls to show.
Sometimes Airbnbs can be less expensive but also hard to cancel.
HotelsByDay. I’ve use it and the prices are good. But, if your date doesn’t show you are screwed and not in the way you were hoping for
It would be a rare hotel (in my experience) that you couldn't check-in by 1 pm or so...and if one wouldn't, having a backup would essentially guarantee it. Of course, you could easily just call the front desk(s) to verify a room is/will be ready.
A nice hack in avoiding cancellation fees is to ask the hotel if you can change your reservation to a few days into the future due to unseen circumstances (e.g. flight was cancelled) - the majority would agree to do so, then you just cancel it the next day or so.
Hey guys, thanks for all the ideas so far. I have checked out both Hotelsbyday.com and dayuse.com and both were a bust. Each of them had exactly 2 hotels to offer, and all 4 were twice as expensive for a day use than a good clean motel I have used in the past charges for an overnight stay! So that motel is my fall back position. (As for Airbnbs, I am totally unfamiliar with that world, no clue at all.) I have several promising M&Gs coming up and need to have a plan in hand in case things work out great!

Sometimes it be like that. I still use it for price checks.
Search "day use hotel". There are several options out there. I've used a couple. I often see options for 10am - 5pm or 8am - 3pm.
Check it out.
There was SB I was seeing. Another monger messaged her and she agreed to meet fir a quickie at an adult bookstore. I guess they have tiny rooms you can rent by the half hour. I was done with her after I heard that. Lol
When I lived in the California Bay Area, I had an SB that lived in a house with her parents in San Francisco. She was a freshman college student and had no car. Hotels in SF are outrageously expensive. Even the "cheap" places like Motel 6 started around $225 per day. But I found a reasonably-priced alternative that may be unique to SF (or perhaps most big cities that have a significant Gay community) - Hot Tubs.
For about $50 and hour you can rent a hot tub room. The room included a shower, a single-bed-size water-proof mattress on a raised surface, and of course, a hot tub. When you checked in you are provided with a set of towels and some bar soap. The rooms are cleaned (and disinfected) right after you leave.
Kind of seedy. Definitely not classy. But no one cares that you are there to fuck, as that is the ulterior business model.
The only logistic issue was parking. Parking in SF sucks.
Life is good
