Gentlemen,

It is my great joy to let you know that over 600 hobbyists found it in their hearts to participate in the first formal survey ever of the TER hobbyist! This is a first and a world record. No other quantitative survey has ever collected this much data on men who seek sexual services through review websites on the Internet.

The survey is now closed and data will be analyzed over the next coming months. Many of the kindly souls who participated provided post-survey feedback, comments and suggestions in return PMs; these were also considered and much appreciated.

At this time, I am not at liberty to explain why some of the questions may have been odd to you, flawed, unnecessary or even seemed useless; suffice it to say that every shred of information provided is extremely valuable and I thank you deeply for your willingness to be part of this groundbreaking project.

Many of you have asked me to send the dissertation once it is completed. While this will not be an immediate possibility, I will share some data on the General Discussion board. This will happen sometime in Jan-Feb 2010. In addition, if the study will be published - and there is a very good chance it will be, since it is a first in the world - I will provide a link to more info.

Once again, my gratitude toward all of you is overflowing. Without your help, the dissertation and the project would never have come to fruition. I thank you for your answers, your kind words, your encouragement, your suggestions, your feedback and your patience. I only hope that my dissertation and continued work will honor your commitment and give you all the respect that you deserve.

clients.  As we all know, these two groups remain stigmatized in a manner no other group I can think of would tolerate.  Even drug abusers and alcoholics get more respect and understanding than men who see escorts.  

Yes, it seems two adults having consensual sex is about the worst thing you can do in the eyes of the public.  The reality is most people would be shocked at how educated, accomplished and "normal" the men that see internet commercial sex workers really are.  Even I was surprised after attending a couple "meet and greets," and I approached the subject with an open mind.

So I'm glad we could help you help us, and I hope this study forms the basis of a successful Ph.D. dissertation.

How representative is this sample really? There is no random sampling here.
Moreover, you are going to have some serious heteroscedasticity here--your error terms are going to be highly correlated.

Just one more question, what is your control here?

Clearly, this is a snowball sample and not a random sample. So is EVERY single study on clients of prostitution available.

This is not an experimental study, so there is no control population. I could compare this population on some variables with the NORC study (as has been done before with Monto's study); however, my hypotheses about THIS specific group of people have very little to do with the population RANDOMLY selected for the NORC study (and Laumann et al, the "Sex in America" study that was lambasted for "not being random enough".)

If you really are interested in the topic, you should look at the studies already undertaken. This one will be revolutionary compared to what's out there. But hey, if you want to try to go through random sampling of men in the United States who have seen prostitutes and who can be completely upfront about it, be my guest, LOL.

I was just interested because i am a hard scientist guy and i see some serious mathematical problems that make almost any inference statistically unsound.

Heay what can you do? I do formal mathematical modeling for a living...can't help it sometimes.

Just a small recommendation: check your standard errors very carefully...you want them to be small

Then you already know that ALL statistics and ALL surveys are already bogus. The  "interpretation" to find some meaning is pure vodoo.

And you know that because you worked on mathematics for more than 15 years and published a whole lot of academic articles, that's how you know that all stats are bogus!

Hate to shut your argument down, but when you don't know what you are talking about and your level of stats does not go beyond SEs and can't even explain them properly, you should keep your opinion about mathematics and statistics to yourself.
