I just wanted my lawnmower fixed (a long OT rant)

(With apologies to 'Lucidly Laconic')

I have a beloved and very politically incorrect lawnmower. A “two stroke’ Lawn Boy that is the bane of both the EPA and the AQMD. (Those familiar with 2-stroke engine genus understand). 12 years of faithful service and it recently began to get finicky. I took it to a rather large and presumed respected repair/sales facility to have a much over-due tune up done and while there I asked if they could replace the well worn drive belt that powers the self propelled feature of the mower.  Two weeks pass and I receive a call saying that "to replace the “belt” would cost the better part of a new mower". I visit the facility a few days later to talk with the mechanic. He shows me the problem at hand while the rest of the personnel are saying to chuck the machine and simply purchase a new one. I ask if there is anything seriously wrong with the engine preventing a reasonable repair bill and the mechanic said NO. I asked what the charge would be to simply tune the mower and return it to me. The estimate was nominal and I kindly asked him to repair and tune the engine and forget the “belt” issue altogether.  I received a call yesterday that my mower was ready. I went to the shop to pick it up and saw the mechanic and thanked him for “saving my politically incorrect, hydrocarbon spewing heirloom from an all to early grave.” He said “fine…if you enjoy PUSHING a lawn mower” I replied “Push?”  He said “Yes ; I cut the old drive belt off since it was worn out”  Incredulous at his arrogant presumption I replied “ It was still working when I brought it here I only asked you to replace it originally as an afterthought since you were going to have it on your bench anyway. You could have just put it back together seeing it wasn’t removing or replacing it on the transmission housing that was the problem. Now I have a $85.00 repair bill for a mower that you have effectively disabled from practical use. They attempted a war of words with me however quickly conceded by offering me my semi-repaired, willfully sabotaged mower back at no cost. So now I have a great running 2-stroke mower complete with the governor adjusted to give me even more RPMs and power but no self-propulsion system in which to make the mower feasibly usable.
For those of you who herald the fact that my EPA - AQMD scorned mower is quasi useless to me; know that I plan to let it run simultaneously(with an extra rich mixture to boot) while I mow my lawn with the new self propelled mower purchased at Sears today. Overtly or covertly I will not be engineered to conform by the “Tree huggers”.

...lounging in your lawn chair, sipping a cold one, while the hired help mows the lawn?

You should try it. I love it. I haven't been on the wrong end of a mower in 5 years and I've never looked back.

However with two large and intimidating dogs in the back yard and an obvious breakdown of simple verbal communication in society overall I feel more at ease doing the job to my personal satisfaction.

  FR.

FR, didja not see the Lion King!?  Think this through my friend - Lex has it right, whereas you are failing to play your part in the Great Circle of Life.  And that hurts us all.

If you fail to pay the punk-azz kid down the block to mow your lawn, he'll never make enough to take out that hot chick on a date that he has been lusting about for weeks, and as a result will never get blown (much less laid).

Now, before you think that this is what you want - either because YOU have been thinking about that hot chick, or worse yet if that hot chick he lusts after is actually your daughter! - consider that he is doing HIS part in the great circle, and unless he helps open that door she may never cross over to the dark side.  She will likely become a nun (and be lost to you forever), while he will be forced to stay home and masterbate, contemplating an easy buck through a life of crime (with you the likley target!) rather than become a productive member of society.

So consider carefully your options here: sweat and toil in the hot sun and become a victim of violent crime, or help a new generation of ladies learn the difference between boys and men.

And I have replaced most of my lawn with planting. By the way, moss under shades works well.

You should be able to find a replacement belt for your 2 cycle security blanket, Linus (just kiddin, FR).

It would be easier to do if you had the old belt, just match it up.  If not, order the new one that is prohibitively expensive (make sure they will give you your money back if you don't install it) and go find a match at an auto parts store (NAPA, whatever).  Damn thing should be less than $20.

For the record, nothing wrong with mowing your own grass.  It's healthy, keeps you in tune with the subtleties of your own yard and surroundings.

Peace.

The lawn mower was designed so that replacement of the belt was such a mechanical nightmare requiring pulling the motor then removing of the "pressed on" pulleys from the crankshaft/blade spindle it would garner huge repair shop bills or simply encourage buying a new "Lawn Boy".

Haven't you got some responsibility in the matter considering you bought such a piece-of-shit planned obsolescence nightmare of a lawn mower in the first place?

In any case, thanks for running a pollution machine out of spite and making it everybody's problem. Party on.

Why do you "need" a self-propelled lawn mower?  I've never used one.  Growing up, mowing about 5 acres, neither me nor my father had self-propelled mowers.  We just used the plain old-fashion gas-powered ones that you pushed.  It worked just fine.

Of course once we got the riding mowers, those push mowers were just for trimming around trees, but we didn't get those mowers until after two years of using the push mowers.

I can keep in much better tune with the subtleties of my yard from my vantage point on my deck.

There's nothing wrong with mowing your own yard, of course, we've all done it -- it's nothing to be ashamed of... My point was only that unless you've tried it, you can't know the exquisite pleasure of sitting on your ass while someone else does the drudgery for you.

Damn, I wish I'd been born rich.

...has anyone heard of a lawn service company that uses pretty girls in bikini's to mow lawns? That seems like such a great idea, but I can't seem to find a company that does it.

"lawnmover" refers to eating a woman's pubic hair?  And this "belt" you speak of, some kind of S&M thing?
"Tree Huggers" is some kind of sex with vegetation?  Any help is appreciated
