If you don't mind me asking, why is it that most of you feel the need to indicate this in your ads?

To me, it smacks of someone who's more interested in hoping to get more $$$ than actually pleasing her clients.

A girl may have a great review(s), but the minute I see this word on their ad, I am instantly turned off.

A little intimidating if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong --I make a decent living, am attractive, clean, and respectful --but wouldn't really consider myself "upscale".

Thoughts?

I'm not a provider, just another hobbyist and I understand what you mean. When they say upscale I think the girls, generally speaking, are looking to meet white collar "professional" men. I think it is a "class thing" where the girls try to avoid blue collar men either because they think blue collar workers don't have the money to see them, aren't cultured enough, or just low class for their taste, who knows...but that is how I feel when I hear girls say they are looking for an "upscale" gentleman.

Upscale or not, blue collar, white collar who cares....I think it is most important that clients, regardless of socioeconomic background, be clean, sane, and respectful of the provider. This is something I rarely see provider discuss on their website....but I think their is bias among providers who to believe that only upscale men are all those things...Class is a subject in the United States that many people avoid talking about.

Not true. Blue or white collar makes no difference. A guy could be a high powered attorney have have no class. We just don't want some ghetto loser off the street who is used to MP's.

To me, the fact that you equate "high powered attorney" with class shows you have no idea what "class" is.  There are many things it is, but a job is NEVER one of them.  This is why you people stick the word "upscale" in everything as though you were advertising a mall that doesn't have a Kmart in it.  It's a huge red flag that just screams "I'm a fake!"  If you don't know naturally, at least do a little homework and pretend.  And remember, if you take my money, that makes you the hired help.

Hey , I love my upscale business men, I love my blue collar men.

As long as the guy is clean, respectful and kind then he is a true "upscale" gentleman in my eyes.

I started out as a dancer 1st doing the club thing and bachelor parties.  Honestly, anytime I had a bachelor party filled with "blue-collar" men the tips were great! it seemed like the guys that did construction for a living or other such jobs, were more then happy to keep on throwing the bills out, and I mean big bills, not just 1s.

Many blue collar men are classy and some make more than the white collar men. It's attitude not what they do for a living.

never thought of it from that point of view before.  You bring up a valid point about the use of the word upscale.  I can't speak on behalf of all the ladies but I'm pretty sure no one meant it as an insult. My understanding of the use of the word upscale is as a simple way to convey the point without being to verbose that they weren't the wham, bam, thank you maim type, have class, intelligence, as well as beauty and their rates are higher than the standard or average.  I could be wrong.  That's just my two cents.

It's merely a tactic to scare off undesirables. It's not meant to be mean.

Not all of us (providers) have the same background when it  comes to education, treatment and  others...
The "Upscale" word of the ads is  referred to us, not to the clients... is maybe also what makes the  diffrence  with a  companion.

that if I charge by the hour, don't call and ask for a 30 min quickie.

I have to get away from family and friends, clean up and get to your location so 30 mins is an insult.

I expose myself emotionally for this job. I hate it when a client can't think of my name, pulls his pants down halfway and says "suck it" and asks for a discount.

makes me feel like a streetwalker.

Just some BS that may be successful with keeping fringe players from joining the game. So many threads where this comes up and whether it's socio-economic status, race, professional versus blue collar, it is my opinion so long as you are clean, a gentlemen, and have cash, you'll not be turned away unless the provider is explicit in telling you her preferences and you don't match them. It pays to do research on the ladies because saves time and the aggravation of being unwelcomed or worse, having a lady take your money with minimum output. If upscale meant anything significant i.e. high roller, the ladies would starve to death. Like any segment of the society, it's guys who describe themselves the way you do that are carrying the load. You can be butt ugly, fat, and semi-illiterate so long as you are clean, not an asshole, your money is as good as viagra popping Rush Limbaugh.

I don't consider myself 'upscale' either. I'm an electrician, single, make fairly good money,  don't have a big beer belly, and am not foul-mouthed. I'm respectful, considerate, clean, don't smoke or drink, d/d free. Does that qualify for 'upscale'? When I see the word in an ad, I usually feel that I couldn't live up to the expectation. I get the idea that 'upscale is a class or two above me. It seems to imply some sort of business exec or something. Just my thoughts.

From your description, I would say that you have a whole lot more going for you than the average guy. Stringing wires is just as important to the world as selling insurance. A gentleman is much appreciated when he can be found.

Being an Engineer I also feel the "upscale" is a totally miss-used word. Who is to say that you are any less upscale than me or the next person, or the next?

You have hit the nail on the head sir.

"I'm an electrician, single, make fairly good money, don’t have a big beer belly, and am not foul-mouthed. I'm respectful, considerate, and clean, don't smoke or drink d/d free. Does that qualify for 'upscale'?"

SURVEY SAYS: Absolutely

To me, it means that the lady is charging the kind of money that requires an upscale as opposed to a downscale gentleman.   Each provider's definition of upscale is different--depending on how much she charges.

You're right, it's probably yet another in the ever-growing list of words that are over used in escort advertising. When one or two SPs described themselves as 'upscale', it likely had meaning, but now that everyone has it, it's sound and fury (signifying nothing, especially when it's misspelled - I saw it on one site as 'upscaled', as in 'I'm an upscaled classy escort').

You could likely add 'discreet' (as opposed to what, verbose and gossipy?) and 'classy' to this list, as well.

When the term 'upscale' is applied to clientelle, I think it's used by us to make clients feel better about themselves for choosing us, as opposed to being intended to sound exclusionary.  Do you really want to read a site that says "I cater to pretty much anyone who can scrape up $200 and dial my number"?. "I cater to upscale gentlemen" sounds so much more classy and discreet ;)

I know what you are saying but it would seem that the term does need to be used at all espically when it modifies gentleman within the sentence as in '...upscale gentlemen'.  When did the term gentleman lose its meaning so that it required additional modification to define it?  It seems to me it is the combination of the two words that are causing folks to read 'class' into the picture.  Gentelman does and should say it all, all by itself....

In my haste to reply, I omitted a key word.  I meant to say that that the term (upscale) does NOT need to be used at all when it preceeds gentlemen.

...but it seldom does.

I can fake upscale. Why even today, without an appointment, I wore matching socks. Pretty dapper, eh what?

That's so klassy! (Note the 'k', because nothing says class like intentionally misspelled words..).

...but I think that deserves a nice, big, pat on the backside.

Let me know when you want to stop by and give me one... be gentle though, I bruise easliy....

Dani, your backside is so lovely that I hardly think one pat could ever be enough ;)

It just means we want nice, decent guys. Not some dirtbagg off the street who wants something for nothing. Don't feel intimidated. So many people will respond to those ads who are not Upscale.

We surround ourselves with people similar to ourselves and by asking for upscale gentleman and seeing upscale gentleman, she is indicating she is upscale herself and wants to be treated as such.

Perhaps she wants to dissuade a certain type of man -- disrespectful, nasty, thug-like, underage, etc. -- from contacting her or let potential clients know she doesn't see any random guy who calls.

You're right, the word is generally misused and I will take all the comments into consideration when writing my own copy.  However, when it is used, I do believe it's less about money and social status and more about character.

...your getting your moneys worth! Not that I want more of it, but that I am well worth it. Outside of a "good time", I can provide pleasant and stimulating conversation about many different subjects; we can have some nice drinks, a massage... you know the "perks" that make the whole experienece a 10+ for a man...

THAT to me means upscale...

Now even though I have seen some (pardom me for saying so) truly trashing looking girls try and pass themselves off as something worth a few thousand by using that word-- and therefore taking away some of its value... but thats doesnt mean that all girls are like that....

Once again it comes down to the basics-- if you see her, you like her, check her out, do some research... find out if she has any reviews and do your homework to determine...

For me, upscale means someone clean and respectful. Someone that knows how to look for a provider and treat her with respect and discretion. Someone that actually reads my website and knows my services and donations before he comes in to see me and doesn't ask about them again or hesitate to pay my recommended rate.

I think you were right by my house too!!

It has three purposes, I think.

First is marketing.  Remember what the website is really for?

Second is to offer some feeble euphemistic defense to LE.  The idea being to suggest that if she's offering her time to upscale gentlemen, then how could it come down to sex for money?  What kind of upscale gentleman does that now?

Third, is acts as a Neanderthal filter.  It keeps away guys who fart, belch and grunt at the challenge of being upscale.

The term is a little shopworn, so it merely turns you off, but you've passed the test, so don't give it a second thought.

Lame you say?  A word is only as good as a word can be, and sometimes it's better than nothing.

The dictionary defines "upscale" as "toward or relating to the more expensive or affluent sector of the market".

From what most of you are saying, you use the word to, more or less, mean someone who's clean and respectful --in a word, a "gentleman" --so why not just say "respectful gentlemen only" or even just "gentlemen only"?

And lest we forget, those ads which indicate "upscale gentlemen" ofttimes use the word "generous" right along with it!

Sorry, but I think there MAY be some of you who simply want to defend your hoping to receive over and above what you charge.

I just think "upscale" is quite simply the wrong word unless you're preferring affluent clients --plain and simple.

And although it is certainly not something that dissuades me, it tells me a lot about the provider.

Looks like it's the wrong word too.

When actions are disdained and quasi-legal, expect the language about it to be full of mis-uses, code words and euphemisms.
