Monger is a slang term for an individual who regularly employs the services of sex workers. It is a shortening of the term whoremonger.
Ding ding ding. Whoremonger is a word I've heard before but forgot. It's a special use of the -monger combo. I guess whoremonger came about because we "promote" whoring. Tenuous, but I can see it. The first thing I thought of when I first saw monger on TER was "fishmonger." Thanks!

Personally, I have always answered to "whore mongering pig". but monger works too. lol
I have always abhorred the term "hobbyist" it strikes me as a term created by people who were secretly, or not so secretly ashamed of the fact that their "Hobby" was fucking hookers.
When I'm 'Hobbying' I am working on my '53 Bel Air or working with my hands creating something!
Now, when I'm Mongering, I also work with my hands, but it is not in any way a 'Hobby'!

When I first joined this website and saw the word often used, I guess I associated it with the word warmonger. Eastside has it correct above that whoremonger also comes to mind.
I doubt I've used the word monger very much in my writing here, I may have used it in the past, those first few weeks or months of joining. I know for a while I used the term hobbyist, only because I also saw it used here by others, but like monger, I've strayed from using it. Nowadays, I believe that I prefer to use the word client more. (If anyone were to peruse my writings, something different may show here and there, so I'm not claiming I exclusively use any one of these in particular.)
Like many other things in life, I'll bet someone on this website early on used monger and it stuck.

Monger is often regarded as a pejorative term today, and as sex work is illegal and considered immoral as well, I suspect the term owes its use to that as well.
I do agree with you that I don't care for the term, nor any other that's out there today. The search continues.

All of the other terms generally carry some kind of disparaging connotation, and there's enough of that given the illegal status of our endeavors here in p4p.
Maybe a better term, "rent-sexual"?
When you buy something you either own the thing outright, or you own the rights to the said property..
For e.g. If you buy the property say in a fee simple transaction, you own the property, the land, and have reasonable right over the airspace as well.
Now, you can't say you own the woman, unless you are a horrible and abusive Pimp. You can call yourself renter of the woman's body for predefined duration for the agreed sum of money, but dude.....that's even more awkward..
So how about calling yourself a player. (or playah if you are brown like me and has swagger or are from Bahstan )

We are not buying the woman.
We are not buying her body; the common slur that she's "selling herself" is even more just plain wrong.

But we are equally not renting the woman's body. At least, I don't and do not ever want to.
Renting it would imply ejecting her from it for the duration of the rental -- UGH. Controlling one body is enough work for me; I couldn't enjoy having to operate two bodies at once.

But we are buying something: experiences, services, skilled attentions, entertainment. One does not say that one "rented" a lawyer or a housecleaner or an orchestra (or their body, or their mind). One purchased their services. One "hired" them.

Monger, short for whoremonger, works well in some contexts. I’ll also use client.
'Suitor' or 'Admirer' are two terms I see a lot of SW'ers using now but I don't like that term as it makes us guys seem like we're trying to win the affections of a provider via courtship. For most of us, that couldn't be further from the truth.
I don’t like those terms either. We sure as Hell aren’t seeing these models because we’re aiming to romance them and then marry them. She wants a suitor? Then stop making me pay for sex lol. Client works better because it highlights the transactional nature of the work. It doesn’t insinuate romantic intent, and clients can seek a service whenever he pleases, including the termination of patronage if the services rendered are found to be of a poor quality. Providers can also discontinue or deny a client’s patronage for breaking rules and/or failure to pay for services rendered. It just sounds so much better that way.
Client and provider are the best terms to describe this type of engagement. Fundamentally that’s what it boils down to, a client seeking the services of a provider. On a personal level I also enjoy how innocuous the terms are and how they don’t specifically refer to sex work, but in the right context that’s exactly what they’re referring to, which makes it a little kinky, almost like verbal foreplay.
I don’t like the term hobbyist. Personally it kinda sounds childish, like we’re a bunch of kids about to put together some model planes. Monger kinda sounds gross and dumb, way too blunt, and quit frankly, it reminds me of fish. Fish monger, cause pussy smells of fish sometimes? Gross. Client and provider all the way.
LOL, I agree and that's what I've started doing! Client works in most situations, and even where it's not a perfect fit, it's not confusing and it'll suffice.
However, it's a bit awkward when used without naming the service, as in: "We clients are a varied lot." Without saying something like, "We sex-worker clients are a varied lot," it kind of fails, whereas using a proper noun doesn't: "We Mongers are a varied lot!" Even though it's not capitalized here on TER, we all know it's being used as a nickname.

Too. Fucking. Funny. I just this minute am watching a show on AP an one of the characters quoted Revelations 21. Said we need a good cleansing! I couldn't give a good fuck about the bible except for the harm it's wrought, but that was crazy. LOL.

This was one definition for "Monger" I saw in a dictionary. This comes close to how it's used on TER.

I hate imprecision in language, although battling it is a pointless, multi-front war and I am losing on all of them. Nonetheless, this has bothered me since I first rubbed shoulders with the hobby. Mongers sell. We don't sell, we buy. The term is wrong, pure and simple, and whoever said it first had the wrong idea about what the word monger meant. Contrary to most opinions here, I like the term hobbyist. In tone, in discretion, in sly sense of humor, I think it's just right.

"Whoever said it first" -- before 1600 A.D., evidently -- got it into the King James Bible. Kinda hard to override or remove that sort of authority, but we can try.
