for me, otherwise unattached also, the issue is folks trying to take advantage in another way. for that the only deterrence is mutually assured destruction. not pleasant, but it works as a last resort, i guess.
I really hate when I read a thread or post and want to contribute a spot on story, but I have to refrain because I have told the story so many times in my non-hobby life or it has details that are so specific to me that I might as well publish my photo and SSN. And without the details the stories fall flat.
Some may ask, "What are the chances of your non-hobby associates reading TER?" Well, over the years I have had more than a few tipsy conversations with acquaintances (male and female) in which each party danced around P4P knowledge. So much so that I wonder if I even have any non-hobby associates!
Later this month I will attend an industry conference and I just might put "TERumbjock" on my name tag. LOL
i once had a situation with a provider where she said: "you know i really don't believe your the kind of guy who would yada yada yada".
the problem is that the "yada yada yada" was a very specific rumor that was once passed around about me in an alternative community 20 years agao. it was the fabrication of a competitor who did not like me very much and tried, but failed, to discredit me and was duly ostracized.
sure enough i go to look at the ladies reviews and find the old handle (from that alt community) and prose style of my old nemesis among her reviewers. there hangs a tale....
so i think i've eliminated most of the specific information. but i probably shouldn't have responded at all. folks will think they have it figured out..... OTOH your caution ISN'T paranoia.
If someone recognizes me in real life from my post, that only proves we share similar interests. Why should that be a problem? Of course, I'm not married either. LOL

your talking about a few words just imagine how many words a picture is worth. Talk about putting your foot in your mouth if the wrong person sees your picture.
I fully understand, Haley. I am fortunate that I hobby with full knowledge and approval of the wife, so I don't have to worry about that angle. My family would laugh or shrug it off, but my professional life might be more problematic. Although, there are worse things that could be said of man. That he chooses to spend time with beautiful women.

Sorry, it's true. Not just on boards, and not just related to the hobby.
Sometimes the self-censorship is simply not telling your wife her new dress makes her ass look fat. But far too often, and this takes place even in science, people self-censor because failure to do so would subject them to economic sanction.
We like to THINK we have come a long way since Galileo was forced to recant the heliocentric solar system model on his knees; but in reality we have not.
