Complex, "rational" behaviors can be mediated by simple chemicals. Eating disorders involve complex strategies of concealment, techniques for disgorging food, body image distortions (dysmorphisms), you could reasonably say there is an "eating disorder lifestyle". Sometimes these syndromes will resolve when the proper medication adjust the brain chemistry.

These (to us, repulsive or freakish behavioral choices) are probably complex syndromatic spirals, bad brain chemistry leads to associating with messed up people, doing other drugs that totally whack out the functioning mind, contracting multiple infectious diseases.... which then leads to further social isolation, withdrawal from a family/community support system, more depression, more of the wrongest drugs, like MDMA (exstasy) that temporarily relieves depressions then causes a major serotonin crash'n'burn (and long term brain injury at a microscopic level)....

Which leads to profoundly nutty, self destructive, illogical behavior, accompanied by equally nutty beliefs and attitudes.

i wonder what this will do to the gay/aids campaign. soliciting help from the general populace while getting stabbed in the back by their own existential, nihilistic, thrill seeking martyrs.

this has been well documented for years. The New York Times did a special report on this phenomenon. It may have been in the Sunday magazine around 1999-2000.

Psychologists/behaviorists were speculating on what motivated otherwise sane adults to place themselves in harm's way. There was or is a large enough population in the SF bay area that makes a stand for unsafe sex practices, such as openly disparaging the use of condoms and refeering to an HIV infection as "the gift" (an unintentional pun for German speakers, as Zyklon B used in the Nazi concentration camps was labelled Giftgas, i.e. poison gas).

There appears to be a high correlation between extreme risk seeking behavior and low serotonin (thus depression) in the brain. A large number of persons imprisoned for violent criminal behavior have low serotonin conditions as well.

Another connection was made between serotonin levels and women who became repeatedly pregnant in spite of any realistic ability to care for the child outside of the welfare system.

Conditions would improve for all concerned if we recognized that two social problems were feeding on each other. The first is depression, that need to be identified and treated so that people may be capable of normal behavior. The second is education, containment, and treatement for those with sexually transmitted infectios diseases.

i don't think "education" has anything to do with this particular problem, since they know full well what the circumstances are. and while this "seratonin" thing might have validity, this strikes me more like,,,,,,,,,,,,,some sort of decadent behavior. i can't put my finger on it but it think it goes beyond self-destruction. more like they want to go out in a blaze of misplaced glory. and in a weird way, it makes sense to me about this misguided subculture. like i'm thimking "yeah, it figures".

1 out of 4.... no way... who did the research for that study?

well, whatever. all i know is that it's been well documented that hiv/aids is on the rise again because many in the gay community are once again having unprotected sex.
