Both may denote the same activity, but the connotation of the words (IMHO) is different. I tend to regard hooker and prostitute as words that evoke a negative feeling, whereas I see escort as a more positively evocative term.

People use both terms to mean "prostitute." But there is a difference. There actually are people who just escort, as in literally accompany another person somewhere, without sex.
