In response to a question on the RO board I expressed the opinion that blurred, "frosty" pics could be easily unblurred or defrosted. I've said that before on GD also with the opinion that the swirl distortion is very easy to undo. There are image processing toolkits that make sharpening up a frosted image pretty easy. The result might not be pretty but it is good enough to recognize the person. I once recognized a provider in public even though all her ads had her face frosted.
In my opinion, the only fairly safe way of protecting your identity from image deblurring software is to replace every pixel on the face with a flat equal value in color and brightness. With no features there is no way to reconstruct facial features.
Although we've covered this topic before, I am adding a ling to a site that has examples. If you need convincing that the above is true I believe the examples might dothat for you.

I have noticed that some providers that blur their pictures in their on-line postings do not mind sending facial pictures by private email. This would seem to make sense, in that facial pictures obtained that way cannot be used to incriminate or associate with being a provider. They could have been obtained from a simple face-book page. I mention this because of a recent very negative experience in contacting a provider I was interested in meeting. I asked her to verify that the body pictures (very attractive) were accurate and were of her. I also asked that she email me a facial image. My requests were polite, but she immediately and repeatedly responded in a hostile manner, as if what I was asking was rude and completely unreasonable. I replied that I could understand if this was outside of her comfort level, but noted that I had my own personal comfort level, so we could just leave it at that. To no avail; the email and TM string was really pretty vile. She even enlisted a provider friend that I had previously emailed from the same address and had wanted to meet, turning her completely against me. This latter provider was someone who did not mind being better verified (p411, etc), so this was particularly upsetting to me.
I refuse to blur or block out my photos. If you see me in public, be sure to come up and say hello. Quietly of course.
Cropping the head out is the only way, it is very easy to unblur a picture.
In a similar discussion I was having with a girl, she claimed that her photos couldn't be stolen because she had a site that didn't allow right clicks. Then in 60 seconds I showed her how easily a photo can be downloaded and reposted from any site - blocking right clicks is useless.
Every trick you think you have come up with to protect your identity, I can promise you someone has already figured out a way around it. Nothing is safe on the internet, ever.
Most providers blur their face to mask being easily identified by some they don't want to know what they do. If someone is out expose them for some mean reasons, they can and will do so by using FBI and CIA anti-blurring techniques.
I always get a chuckle out of people when they talk about protecting privacy. They are on Face Book, Twitter, Flicker and many other social networking sites because it is hip these days. If you are on any social networking site, you ain't protecting shit. You want to protect your privacy, you have to think before you act, every single time even then, it will not be 100% and there is no such thing in the US where trading in other peoples information is multi-billion dollar business for marketing and targeting consumers. Used to get a lot of invites to join social networking sites, and politely decline and when anyone asks me, I tell them I am paranoid.
