edAs usual, I am home watching the history channel and they are talking about ancient forms of prostitution.

Apparently, in temples honoring the Baal there were prostitutes who perform "sexual rituals" to celebrate and honor Baal. As well, it was tradition when welcoming strangers/foreigners to a community you would offer them a chance to "enjoy" the women of the community as a form of hospitality.

That's one a hell of a welcome wagon.

That the ritualistic worship of Ball had to do with all types of Golden and Brown showers as offerings to Baal...they were a very kinky bunch..

Similar customs continue to this very day in certain parts of Alaska. Not all of them are remote, as you might think. I have been told (by VERY reliable sources) that once you get past the hair and the smell~~muktuk~~you've got it licked. I cannot conform or deny, nor do I intend to do so. Anyone ready to TOFTT? :)

As a high schooler, I took Latin (I know)and so long ago they were referred to as Vestales Virgines (Vestal Virgins) who served the priests and elites.  Imagine a 50's Latin teacher trying to explain that to teenage boys.

I took 4 years of Latin!  Porto, portas, portat portamus, portatis, portant etc, etc...... (42 years ago and never again used).......  I knew the teachers and they spent their time jacking off in the closet/bathroom or giving each other bbbjtccim! (NO! I never participated with that even though I was a bit pressured.) What a bunch of fucking sickos!!! They should have been put into the penitentiary and had their own assholes reamed!!!!

Actually I have found use for the Latin, particularly the history it taught me.  How could anyone watch the film Gladiator and not have an insight that the casual viewer would never appreciate.  Caesar's Gallic Wars! Crossing the Rubicon, Cleopatra, The Anead, Julius Caesar, The Punic Wars. Veni, Vedi, Vici.

The Jewish people were geographically right in the middle of these cultures.  I think much of the religion could be understood as a back-lash against it. And by extention, that's true of Christianity and Islam as well.  Look at the books of the prophets and what they say about prostitution.  It's pretty clear that politics became religion there.

I actually think the modern independent tryster to be the social successor of those ancient priestesses.

Which makes me a religious atheist.

check out the temple dieties sculptures in India, I think sex was a part of Hindu religion back 1000 years or so ago.  I hear the sexy temple dancers used to have sex with the priests as part of the religious ceremonies. In my mind I see the oiled dancers with their hand bent dancing around the priests (don't know what the actual reality is though).
