Most ladies don't use Skype -- it requires a COMPUTER or IP connx and a VOIP box. Nearly all the ladies use cellular hobby-fones.
Also, Skype requires you to "register" (only basic, non-verifable info) with their connection service in order to receive Skype calls, which can make some folks nervous.
FYI, they DO keep track of your DNCS-assigned IP address, DNS, and routing info. So, unless you are using a totally anon, encrypted (i.e. paid) proxy server, you can quite EASILY be tracked back to source by the average bear.
I used to use it for my business until I got tired of the occassional gaps, dropouts, and bizarre squawks. Call quality is midway between that of cellular and landline.
Because it is a free "over-the-top" web 1.0, IP-routed app, not a TRUE VOIP network-resident nor 2.0 app, Skype cannot prioitize packets on a provider's network (here "provider" means telecommunications provider, NOT a lady!). This results in delayed and/or out-of-sequence packet arrival, and so gaps, squeals, and annoying echoes in received audio.
All-in-all, it's not a well-aligned business model for the hobbyist either, as it leaves an IP addr and MAC trail EVEN if you use a proxy server.
Of course, if you are single, you may not care, but then, you could use your home phone, right?
SKYPE is quite a bit like MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger but much better. I use it all the time to video conference with associates all over.
The problem with the other two is you can experience horrendous time lag (Like those bad old Japanese movies that were dubbed).
Be sure you have a good camera if you intend to video chat though. If not using video you'll still need a microphone to chat. Get a decent camera though. I'd suggest a Logitech Pro9000 at least. It does autofocusing and you even have the ability to "mask" yourself with a few different characters that mimic you as you talk.
I would not recommend using it to make telephone calls though. For that you should get MagicJack, which I've suggested to several "traveling" folks. It's a good alternative to Vonage and much cheaper at roughly $60 a year for unlimited calling. ($39 for the device and $20 annual fee).
The device travels with you and you can set it up with an anonymous profile and pick any area code and exchange you want.
You can tote a cheap $10 phone with you to use in a hotel or just plug the hotel phone into it. You can dial into your number to retrieve messages from another phone as well.
For inexpensive and reliable global communications it is the best- I don't run a web cam because it will compromise the quality if the call- SKYPE can be loaded into specific mobile phones which have WiFi capability and can be used as a cell phone abroad- The phone actually picks up wireless signals and is Voice over Internet but without the restriction of being attached to a laptop or desktop. I don't advertise on SKYPE but I am aware of ladies who do- it doesn't seem as popular in the US as it is abroad but many countries use it extensively. I just love it because it is global and I can always receive my calls regardless of where I am- T
