they would probably scour the laptop for all sorts of shit and let you walk right through with a 9MM stuffed in your pants! Just don't be like Plax. Make sure the safety is on!
My best guess is these guys are after sites like youjizz.com that offer free downloads of videos they've illegally copied. Too much trouble going after small "fishers" like yourself.
How do we know which are truly free and which are on the radar for these guys? I only recently discoved "youjizz.com" when scrolling further down the google search (free porn). Is there a list anywhere of what is safe and not? I know good luck keeping that up to date - LOL.

I would estimate that I go through screening on average about 150 times a year. I have NEVER had my laptop even opened a single time in the many years that I have been traveling.
I am not a big fan of TSA, but I constantly hear all these horror stories and even though I travel enough to maintain Platinum status on two different airlines, I still have yet to witness any of these abuses personally. I am not saying that isolated incidents don't happen, but they can't possibly be as widespread as reported or I am simply living a charmed life.
The first question I got was whether I wanted it done in private. HELL NO, this is gonna be fun. I embarrassed the shit out of the poor guy with my repeated comments. I used to get my printer inspected every trip, but they finally caught on. Tell me again about the baggie full of liquids? I've taken that out of my bag exactly once in the last year.
The closest I've come to my laptop being looked at is them not letting me put the laptop, iPad and phone all in the same bin.
I don't travel much anymore, but when I did I had to often open my lap-top and turn it on. Same deal with the little bottles of shampoo, etc. Perhaps it's my turban and full, black beard.
Reminded me of the first time I traveled with a laptop. Half the screener's in NY did not even know what a laptop was (showing my age) never mind the fact that I carried my own RS232 cable with me for connection. A big solid rectangle with a coil of wire. I get stopped and then had to explain to them what a laptop was.

The look on the TSA guy or gal's face when they go and open up my laptop.
