I don't know about the overall trend, but as far as technology, specifically people spending too much time in the Internet instead of getting out and meeting people, I think it's just the opposite.

TER is a good example... where else would like minded people be able to interact, anonymously if we choose, and still get the benefit of a community with out having to leave the house.

Interestingly a couple of years ago when a frequent poster (Rice Chaser?-- I think in a car accident) and a provider both died (I can't recall her name at the moment but she was from San Francisco and drowned in an accident in Hawaii) I really felt sad as if two friends had died suddenly.

I think the Internet has made communities much more diverse and plentiful. And there's nothing to stop people who meet on line from gathering face-to-face.

But as the article notes I'm sure it's a different story for the less fortunate who lack the access and education to take part in the new world.
