Was this a high end hotel? That's absurd.

While I stepped out for coffee! WTF? Is this common? I tried to get in my room and key card didn't work. Housekeeping was in the hall and said 'oh we thought you left so we cleaned the room and checked you out'.

It was 9:30am!

Has this happened to anyone else before?

If it were around 10:30 to 11:00 AM I could understand it, but it seems likes they jumped the gun a bit, maybe they were expecting a rush that day and were trying to get a jump on it.

I hope you went to the front desk and had you key recharged, BTW what did they do with your stuff in the room? That should have been their first hint that you hadn't left yet.

You have to remember to keep that "Do not disturb" card on the door.  They are always eager to get that room turned around for another customer.

You should ALWAYS leave the DND sign up when you leave the room for whatever reason so they don't come in. Yet another reason I HATE having to use hotels.

If you've already packed and taken everything out to your car, this can happen if housekeeping thinks that you've already left. I've had that happen a few times when I packed up and took everything to the car, then went for breakfast, and thought I would chill out in my room for a few hours after instead of waiting at the airport.  Now I leave the suitcase open on the bed an the DND on the door.  I've found the DND wont always stop housekeeping from knocking and entering if they think you're checking out.

This was definitely an upscale hotel. I only had an overnight bag with me so I always bring it with me as I have heard horrror stories about staff going through your stuff.

From now on that DND tag will go on my door from the moment I check-in until I am checking out.
Lesson learned

You still have the right to use the room you paid for, just go to the front desk and tell them to recharge your key and feel free to stay until checkout time, No UPSCALE hotel is going to deny you the right to use the room you paid for for as long as your "contract" provides for.

Has to do when she checks in is "PAY" for Late Checkout . Its like the airlines now. Kate check out has been around for awhile . Now some hotels do late check out for am.ex. plat. And up card holders , but let them know when you check in.

Because you did not leave anything in the room to show you have not checked out. If you say you are in high class hotel, there is no chance of hotel staff going through your stuff or anyone else’s for that matter. It is highly unlikely in most of the hotels unless it “Rent for the week for $99” kind.

When you travel there are some implied trust you have to have

1. The pilot will fly the aircraft safely if you are flying

2. Hotel you stay is going to respect your privacy and would enter or search your room when you are there

3. They have changed the sheets since the last customer left

4. Towels in the room are fresh and not just folded to look like it is fresh by spraying Febreeze

Same implied trust goes when your in a restaurant eating.

Just saying.

Mentioned it but a lot if hotels are doing away with room service too. So find a place nearby that delivers to the hotel if you require certain things.

Housekeeping is f'n clueless in some hotels.  if it's not past check out time and you haven't checked out at the front desk they have no business going into your room.  I always put the DND sign out when I leave my room to go get coffee or breakfast.  Sometimes they ignore that to.  Complain at the desk, quite often it will get you a free meal or points.

Yes I understand that and the front desk was very kind. The housekeeper was not as pleasant. She made me feel very uncomfortable for considering going back into the room after it was cleaned. I will say that any other time I would have marched myself back in there to hang out until I was good and ready to leave. Check out is noon. That's what I paid for.
The problem was I had a client on his way and 5 housekeepers in the hallway now and they had already taken notice of me. It would not have been a discreet situation for either of us so I ended up cancelling last minute on this gentleman after he made his way to see me.

I can't exactly explain my dilemma to hotel staff lol

but as a John, i have a lot less to lose by doing so.

I will say that if it were an upscale hotel I would tell management that housekeeping and that maid in particular was rude to you, you pay good money, you deserve respect. The fact that you are a hooker is irrelevant.

You most likely made the right decision as it wasn't just yourself at risk, you don't have the right to put your client at risk too, so biting the bullet and just leaving was probably the only thing you could do.

I hope your gentleman client was understanding.

First, Always leave some items In the Room!  Examples, spare clothes, a book, or anything else your world will not collapse if you leave it there. Personally, I leave my suitcase which often has a valuable camera in it (and I travel only with a cheap laptop).  Leave the TV ON, with the DND card on the door.  This gives the illusion you are still there.

Second, if this is a hotel you use frequently, LEAVE The housekeeping staff a tip, but only AS you leave, not before... Conditioning, kinda like Pavlov's dogs...  However, if it is a once and done hotel, tip the maid for fresh towels or any other request you may have of her.  I know, adds to the expense, but keeps the focus off what you do and on how she/he can help you.

Cancelling the guy, I'm a bit like others, I have had sessions with maids in the hall, don't bother me, but if you explained it to me, I would acccept your discomfort and comply with your wishes.

As to "trust."  Sorry, seen too many reports on what hotels "really do" when turning a room to blindly accept that the room is cleaned as it should be.  The glasses are only wiped in the room, rather than being washed properly, sheets are only smoothed rather than replaced.  if the towel ain't wet, it is often refolded, etc.  I have also found items in the room, left by the previous guest  Ugh!

Over the years I have traveled a lot for pleasure, business and my kids (Karate tournaments, soccer tournaments, and basketball tournaments...) lemme tell yas, hotels are there to make money, not provide a clean and germ free environment.  Want proof, take a black light into a hotel room!!!

Are there solutions, not really, but when I see a provider who has her own linens on the bed, I respect her and understand why.  I always feel better about that.

Thus it is absurb that the room would be rekeyed & housekeeping would start their work.
I hope you raised hell at the front desk.
There should be a free stay involved in this.

Even here on TER I don't know if I can repeat exactly what my response is, but it's something along the lines of "go away you fucking cunt" only not quite so nice. lmao

I do however leave all my stuff in the room until I actually check out, that way their is no chance they can think that I have actually left, if they clean the room that way and I mess it up again, I don't lose a minute of sleep over it.

Every time I have to travel, I make it a point to visit the front desk to collect my receipt and turn in my room keycards, just to make sure there are no weird charges. And every time, the staff seems surprised that I'm checking out face-to-face. Most of them slip the receipt under the door early on your last day, and assume you'll leave the keycards behind.

Hotels are shady assholes, and here's why.

About 10 years ago I got married (and a few years afterward I was divorced), and for my wedding night my parents paid for a hotel room nearby at a very upscale place, a bottle of champagne to be delivered, it was going to be a relaxing end to a great day.

It was an afternoon wedding with a dinner to follow, then dancing, an open bar, and an after-party back at my parents' house. We didn't wrap up til close to midnight, and right before we left to go to the hotel, my spidey-sense started tingling. I called the hotel to check on the status of our room, and it turns out they gave it to someone else. Now they were fully booked, which meant I was spending my wedding night in my old bedroom, sharing a double bed with my bride.

Note that I said my parents paid for the room, since it was a special package they had set up it was charged in advance. Those assholes took the money, then rented the room to someone else afterward. According to their policy, they can rent unused rooms even if someone else already paid for it. My mom fought that up the corporate ladder for weeks and ended up getting a refund of twice what she originally paid.

Nothing surprises me with these guys anymore.

I will frequently ask the front desk for a complementary late check out (usually an hour or two delay).  They alert housekeeping of the delay and this provides the opportunity for my kid to return to the room after an early morning game to shower and change clothes for the trip back home.

Usually this does not present an issue and is at no charge.  but of course, we leave the DND sign on the door, and our gear is still in the room.

bugs the crap outta me.  In the old days, to "officially check out" you had to go to the front desk, hand them your key (an actual metal object) and sign for the room billing.  You might be allowed back to retrieve your luggage, but most often, it was with you (or brought down by the bell hop) when you checked out.  It was only after this formal ceremony that the house staff would dare enter the room you formerly occupied.

Sigh, the yesterdays of elegance gone by.

In the US I never "check out", I simply leave when I am ready and sometime after I am gone they clean the room, my credit card is billed and I and the hotel both save some time.

In many other countries though, if you don't actually go to the front desk and check out, good luck getting past the doorman with your luggage. So those days of "elegance" are still here, just not in this country.

Several years back, during my "casino days" I made a spur of the moment trip to Biloxi on a busy holiday weekend. I gave this particular casino, The Biloxi Grand, a lot of play back then and when I called last moment for a room my host said sure, and that no matter how late that night I got in a suite would be ready for me even though the hotel had been "officially" sold out for weeks.

When I get there it's pretty late and the VIP check in is closed, so I head over to the regular checkin line and while waiting I hear this poor couple arguing with the clerk about the room that they had booked weeks earlier and paid for that no longer was available for them. These two had done everything they were supposed to do, they made a reservation weeks in advance, paid for it with a credit card, showed up when they were supposed to, only to find they had no room. I know exactly what happened to their room, My host overrode their reservation because I spent a LOT more money in a weekend than this young couple would have spent in a month.

Fair? of course not. Did I feel guilty? Yes. Did I offer to give up my room for them? Hell fucking no!!! lmao

Which lets the hotel off the hook for thinking she had checked out IMO. It does NOT let the bad attitude of the housekeeper off the hook however.

It's no big deal to go to the front desk to get your key recharged, I have to do it all the time as those keys stop working for a thousand different reasons, Invariably the clerk recharges my key with a smile and I go about my business. If OTOH housekeeping started glaring at me for THEIR mistake, then I would make an issue out of it. I treat the lowliest of employees with respect, I expect no less in return.

I don't know where you are staying at but this month alone I've been in Paris, Berlin, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Earliest checkout time has been 11am and latest is noon. Most will extend you by 1 hour with no late check out fee. 9am, are you serious. Breakfast isn't done being served in most 4/5 star hotels at 9am. They sure don't expect you to have your bags out of the room before you eat.

It's time to turn down the AC/DC and stop all the cross dressing my friend!

Yep...exactly. I once went swimming at 9 am with my daughter and our check out time was 12. I always leave the curtains open so I could actually see our room way up there from the pool area, and noticed someone was in it. Keep in mind I had the sign up on the door, so that's one hotel that will never get my business again, but they did offer me a free night's stay or an upgrade if we wanted to stay another night, which we did lol. Sometimes it pays to complain, but in an adult manner.

We'd had a really bad day (wife, 4 kids, everything the moving company didn't take in a grey Dodge wagon...  boat in tow & a sailfish on the roof.  Hit some steel crap that came off a trailer truck & took out 2 tires on the boat trailer I had in tow.  (Fortunately we didn't wreck & we not injured.)  I had 1 spare for the trailer.  AAA took forever but did find a replacement.  Then we hit torrential rains, the wipers couldn't keep up...  just had to drive slower.  We called ahead to the hotel to let them know we'd be checking in late but because the room was guaranteed we pressed on.  The room was guaranteed by my employer.  Got there about 11.  You guessed it...  they'd let the rooms go.  The hotel frantically called all over the city to find us rooms...  the GTE corporate card got their attention.
They gave some excuse about "just let them go" but I never believed it.

...and whenever I ask for a late check out, Hilton usually asks me if 2pm works for me.  I once checked in very late, around 1am, and when I asked for a late check out, they said they offered me 4pm.  I was floored!

I think much of it really just depends on whoever is checking you in.  The guy who offerd me 4pm, his hometown was Miami, so when he saw thats where I was coming from he was asking me about the city and how its grown since he left...so I think it was because of that he was extra cool about it.
