This is supposedly part of the transcript of an actual radio conversation between Canadian authorities & a US Navy ship off the coast of Newfoundland in Oct 1995.
Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees south to avoid a collision.
USN: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees north to avoid a collision.
Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees south to avoid a collision.
USN: This is the Captain of a US Nay ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again...you divert YOUR course.
USN: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic Fleet. We are accompanied by 3 destroyers, 3 cruisers, & numerous support vessels. I DEMAND that you change your course 15 degrees north!! I say again, that's one-five degrees north...or counter measures WILL be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
In White Horse we called ourselves Canajians... 'Course a Yank calls us one and we kicked ''is arse straight off the drywalk and into the muddy street.
Funny joke, can't take that away from the poster, but it most certainly is fiction! It would be impossible to confuse a lighthouse with an underweigh vessel. Just thought I'd throw that in here. Yeah, I know! Who the hell cares?
Aviation has dozens of similar humorous, but always unverified, conversations that supposedly take place between the tower and aircraft (and were always heard by pilots in the other planes). They're jokes that only become real in the re-telling. Pilots are an easy audience for the stories because they have a good laugh at the expense of the almighty tower and the FAA. The joke writers keep churning them out for the aviation rags, and years later when the source is forgotten they become "reality."
